Baul Songs, Kirtan & Music the secret codes.

The Trilogy of The HISTORICAL Autobiography of Vaishnava Baul will be released soon. This piece on Baul Music is a short version, the long version will be released in the trilogy on Baul (Vayu Tula) copyright. Every post, every word in the Trilogy of Baul or in Purna Das Bauls book on Baul Philosophy, or that came from BabuKishan.com the first Baul website copied by over 1 million people from the 1990s to 2006 is copyrighted.

“When people steal from our culture they end up distorting our culture, they turn it into something we do not even recognize, erasing us by replacing us.”

They re-package a watered-down or romanticized version. The mainstream world then accepts the fake/distorted version as authentic, effectively erasing the original living caretakers and replacing them in the public consciousness. I have see this in academia, and in the western audiences who do not have a clue, if it sweetly smiles and looks exotic it must be, whether their lineage is fake, their style and songs are appropriated, they have not got a clue.

When a sacred song, medicine, or teaching is taken out of its traditional lineage, it loses its spirit or in this case Baul essence (the Shakti that has been passed down for hundreds of years). When the dominant society spreads that distorted version, the original community is erased because their true practice is no longer recognized—even by their own youth who grow up seeing only the mainstream caricature.

To protect the integrity of this Lineage (Pramapara) I am releasing some important parts of this lineage before they can be poached by pretendian as Babu Kishan calls Baul Hawkers. Here presented is a drop of the Ocean of this singular Lineage of Parampara of recorded 13 generations that go back to the origins of the story.

This lineage made Baul know, made Baul famous, that is why jackpot fundraisers, donation gathers and international travel became a business for cosplaying Bauls. This lineage as indigenous people never protected their intellectual property until recently. The time of poaching Baul saying you are the next Purna Das Baul who is a famous one and only first and last Baul singer now in his 90s is insideous claim, claiming you are the new Baul ambassador, a name coined by Babu Kishan with a big story is outrageous.

Do not superimpose anything in this blog onto any cosplaying self-titled Baul Artists or Baul Masters there is no such thing, Baul is indigenous and nobody in India or outside of India would know anything about Baul without this lineage. In this singular ancient ancestral indigenous traditional Baul-Kīrtan and Sahajiyā lineage, Deha-tattva (literally "body-truth" or the metaphysics of the physical vessel) is not a theoretical philosophy—it is an operational, somatic reality. It rests on the foundational axiom:

"Jā āche brahmāṇḍe, tā āche dehe"

(Whatever exists in the macrocosm/universe exists directly within the physical body.)

In traditional performance, the physical body of the Sādhaka-Kīrtanīyā is treated as the living stage (vrindāvana), the instrument, and the temple all at once. The macrocosm is mapped directly onto the human anatomy through several primary structural layers:

The Body as Sacred Geography (Pīṭha and Bhūmi)

The physical anatomy is understood as an internal geography where cosmic realms and divine pastimes (līlā) are continuously occurring:

The Lower Centers (Material / Earth Realm): Associated with the physical functions, physical birth, and the unrefined, instinctual drive (kāma).

The Heart Center (Hṛdaya-padma): The threshold where gross emotion transforms into refined devotional mood (bhāva).

The Crown / Upper Center (Sahasrāra / Goloka / Vrindāvana): The highest internal realm where the non-dual union of the divine masculine and feminine principles (Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa or Puruṣa-Prakṛti) resides in eternal repose.

During a performance, the singer’s internal focus moves through these centers. The music is designed to pull energy upward from the base to the crown, turning the performance space into a physical manifestation of internal cosmic geography.

The Four States and Four Vessels (Cāri-Chānd)

To understand how the macrocosm operates inside the body, the tradition divides human existence into four distinct internal levels or "moons" (Cāri-chānd):

Vessel / Level	Anatomical & Esoteric Mapping	Performance & Spiritual Function
Sthūla (Gross Body)	Physical flesh, bones, blood, and vocal apparatus.	The external sound (sur), physical posture, and rhythm (tāla).
Pravarta (Initiated Body)	The subtle nervous system, breath channels (Iḍā, Piṅgalā, Suṣumnā).	Breath control (prāṇāyāma) synchronized with melody to direct subtle energy upward.
Sādhaka (Practicing Vessel)	The emotional and energetic mind (chitta and bhāva).	Absorption in the story of the pad (song), shifting from ego to devotional identity.
Siddha (Perfected Vessel)	The internal spiritual form (Siddha-deha) centered in the crown.	The experience of Rasa (divine taste) where performer, song, and divine reality merge into one.

Sound as Internal Alchemical Agent

In Baul-Kīrtan, sound is not merely acoustic vibration designed for an audience's entertainment; it is a physical catalyst designed to alter internal physiology:

The Breath (Prāṇa): The voice is fueled by controlled abdominal breathing centered in the lower Dan Tiān or Mūlādhāra/Svādhiṣṭhāna area. By controlling the breath rate through rhythmic singing, the singer calms the internal subtle winds (vāyu).

Vibration and the Nerves (Nāḍī-śuddhi): The resonance of specific rāgas and sustained vocal tones vibrates the spine and brain, clearing energetic channels (nāḍīs).

Transforming Kāma into Prema: The core goal of Deha-tattva performance is internal alchemy—using the heat (tāpa) generated by intense musical rhythm and devotion to distill raw desire (kāma) into unselfish, divine love (prema).

The Performance Space as Living Ritual

When a Rasika or Baul singer steps onto the stage with an Ektārā or Khōl (drum), every physical action mirrors internal anatomy:

The Instruments as Body Extensions: The Ektārā (one-stringed instrument) represents the central spinal column (Suṣumnā nāḍī) and the singular focus on the non-dual truth. The two heads of the Khōl drum represent the dual forces of nature (Puruṣa and Prakṛti / sound and rhythm).

Movement and Dance: The rhythmic stepping and spinning (nṛtya) during high-energy Saṅkīrtan are designed to open the physical joints, release physical tension (song), and allow the subtle energy to circulate without blockage.

Ultimately, in traditional Baul-Kīrtan, the singer does not sing about God in a distant heaven. Through Deha-tattva, the singer uses the body as a micro-cosmic laboratory to bring the divine reality down into the flesh and bone of the present moment.

Nabani Das Khyapa Baul is the first Baul ever to sing or dance singularly on stage, then Padma Shree Baul Samrat Purna Das Baul and then Krishnendu Das Baul (Babu Kishan) they are the first and last of everything that is modern Baul over more than a hundred years.

This is important because 'Newcomers to BAUL', are watering down, reducing and dumbing down Baul. The speculation on who the Bauls are is mind boggling. Scholars have never got it right, they only speculate or talk to the wrong people. These statements will be qualified one by one.

Babu Kishan has preserved his one and only'Lineage Baul' because he could fore tell the change Baul was even going through back in the 1970's.

No one in this world would know who the Bauls of Bengal are without all the work of this family, this lineage and Babu Kishan. All Bauls follow this lineage, this lineage is ancient and they do not follow anybody.

The new Baul singers, follow this lineage by singing their songs, by dressing as they dress, by following them around the world and by meeting their friends.

Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Rabindranath Tagore, Osho and many others were only associated with this family and this lineage.
