Reclaiming the Authentic Lineage of Vaishnava Sahajiya Bhakti Tantric Bauls
The Vaishnava Sahajiya Bhakti Tantric Bauls represent the one and only true Baul Lineage, also known as a Guru-shishya parampara sampradaya. This ancestral indigenous tradition of Bhakti Yoga and Kirtan hails from Birbhum, West Bengal, India, tracing its roots back to the very beginning of the Radha and Krishna story over 5000 years ago.
It's crucial to understand that no other Bauls even discussed Vaishnavism until recently. In recent decades, "pretendian fake Bauls" began to adopt full tilaka (Vaishnava markings on their forehead) and impersonate Radha. However, only this authentic lineage historically wore the Vaishnava tilaka.
There is no other legitimate parampara concerning Baul. The only true Baul Avadhuta of the past century or more was Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. This is the complete and final history of Baul.
The Looting of a Legacy: Firsts and Lasts Stolen
All the historical "firsts and lasts" of this authentic lineage are being reworked and performed by imposters. This constitutes a blatant looting of this lineage's songs, dress, style, dance, instruments, and everything they have already lived as pioneers in the Baul tradition.
The profound connections of 'Baul and Tantra' and the Baul tattvas (philosophical principles) have only ever been revealed and are exclusively associated with this genuine lineage. Furthermore, 'Baul and Gaudiya Vaishnavism' have always been deeply intertwined with this parampara, as their ancestor is Nityananda of Ekachakra, Birbhum, West Bengal, India. This lineage has tirelessly fundraised for the Gaudiya Math for decades.
Similarly, the association between 'Ramakrishna and Baul' is solely linked to this lineage, driven by KD Babu Kishan, who was a monk at the Ramakrishna Mission for 12 years and dedicated decades to fundraising for them.
It's astonishing and deeply concerning what is happening. Picking apart and exploiting the history of this authentic lineage will never legitimize these imposters. When KD Babu Kishan finally speaks out, the full truth will be revealed.
The Internal Threat to Baul: A Fight Against Misappropriation
Cultural misappropriation isn't just an external threat to Baul; the most significant danger to indigenous Baul culture comes from within India itself. This internal threat is deeply intertwined with lies and false narratives, where individuals claim the already lived experiences, pioneering efforts, and unique achievements of this authentic lineage as their own.
Disclaimer: What has been written in this and other posts, blogs (since 2008 on lineagebaul.blogspot.com), and KD Babu Kishan's three now out-of-print books, has no connection whatsoever to any other traveling Baul today. If you're reading this blog to try and understand any "pretendian" or social media-famed, self-titled Bauls, know that they bear no relation to the history of this one and only pioneering lineage. This is precisely why reclaiming this lineage's songs, styles, dance, instruments, kirtans, and its true history is of utmost importance.
This lineage worked incredibly hard, pioneering Baul from a small sect to recognition across Bengal, all of India, and worldwide since the 1950s. To have all their songs, and all their "firsts and lasts" (their intellectual property) stolen, reworked, and acted out through pictures, singing, and now diluted false narratives is a profound injustice.
This lineage is distinct and indigenous ancestral. Therefore, if you are reading this to learn about Baul and then try to superimpose that understanding onto another fake lineage, understand that there is no association. All songs will eventually be qualified and correctly attributed.
KD Babu Kishan is the undisputed expert in Baul songs, music, and the folk music of India. He gained this expertise by categorizing all of India's folk music for major recording companies in Mumbai. He knows precisely what constitutes a Baul song and who its true poets are. He has dedicated over 60 years to preserving Baul. We are not selling anything, collecting donations, or fundraising for financial gain. He doesn't seek to be a "Baba." His sole claim is the preservation of his ancestral indigenous human rights and self-determination as an indigenous Baul, ensuring that Baul is preserved correctly for future generations, not as some watered-down, reduced version. This lineage pioneered Baul and made it famous, and it's precisely because of their efforts that many others have exploited and faked Baul for recording contracts, donations, and financial "jackpots."

Krishnendu Das Baul (Babu Kishan): A Voice Against Fakery
Krishnendu Das Baul, also known as Babu Kishan (BabuKishan.org), is the eldest of his generation of Bauls and a direct disciple of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. He is thoroughly weary of the pervasive lies and myth-making, whether propagated by academic scholars, journalists, or the "fake pretendian actor shilpi Bauls."
As stated on his blog (
Therefore, if you are reading this to learn about other "traveling Bauls," be aware that what is written in this blog has likely been poached and bears no relation to any social media-famed, self-titled Bauls. If you read or see details of this lineage, or KD Babu Kishan, or his family's life stories reworked and presented as generic, random Baul narratives with their names removed from the history of Baul, be certain: 100% of it was taken from this lineage and re-presented as if "random or generic Baul" did this or that. They are misappropriating this lineage's stories and history. For further context, refer to:
It is absolutely insane that this needs to be explicitly stated.
The Pervasive Industry of Fake Bauls
For decades, Baul has been faked and exploited. Its songs, style, dress, instruments, lived stories, travels, and achievements have all been remade and reworked by nakal fake shilpi Bauls. These myth-makers have created "fake Baul Gurus" and "fake Baul lineages." How would you know the difference? You wouldn't. There are many myth-makers, speculators, and plain users of Baul, just as there is now an entire industry of fake Tantrics and Sadhus.
This one and only Baul lineage, a Guru-shishya Parampara Sampradaya, has had its intellectual property—songs, dance, dress, instruments, and stories—stolen and replaced by fake lineages and fake Baul Gurus. Baul has been reduced to a "Master Class in Emotional Theatre," dripping with carefully selected, performative photos.
The intellectual indigenous property theft from this lineage is entering a new phase of false narratives. Their lived lives as "firsts and lasts" in Baul have been taken and replaced by false associations. A new "cult of personality" has arisen, evident for at least the last 15 years in one instance, building on a trend that started in the 1970s. The first generation of "pretendian Bauls" were refugees who copied Purna Das Baul; an earlier wave copied Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. Now, the most recent wave copies Nabani, Purna Das Baul, and KD Babu Kishan for recording contracts, to travel the world, and to fundraise in the name of Baul.
An important distinction: Baul has been preserved by KD Babu Kishan for over 60 years. There is no need for any fake Bauls to fundraise to "preserve Baul"; Baul is already preserved.
So-called "experts" on Baul are stripping away the very essence of this lineage's lived experiences. They remove the names of this lineage's stalwarts, even audaciously calling Baul Samrat, Pandit, Padma Shree Purna Das Baul a "shilpi Baul" on the internet. This is utterly insulting to these fakes. They act all-knowing and innocent while appropriating Baul, not even truly understanding what they are talking about. Younger generations in India today, paying to learn Baul from these imposters, have no idea that these teachers themselves have no genuine connection to Baul beyond appropriating from their own "fake Baul Gurus," who, in turn, took everything from this authentic lineage and mimicked what they could copy.
The Threat of AI and the Battle for Baul's Narrative
The biggest threat to indigenous Baul, specifically the Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Baul of Birbhum, is now AI ('artificial intelligence'), particularly for those fabricating false narratives. They presume to be authorities on Baul based on these falsehoods, using the songs, style, and dance of this ancestral lineage and copying their lived experiences. Time is up; they will be exposed.
These imposters scatter false narratives for public consumption, acting as if they possess knowledge or were associated with Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and KD Babu Kishan's already lived experiences regarding Baul and:
'Tantra & Baul'
'Gaudiya Vaishnavism & Baul'
'Baul & Ramakrishna'
'Baul & Rabindranath Tagore'
'Baul and recording Baul music'
'Baul and all Indian radio'
'Baul and international travel'
'Baul and teaching at Universities'
'Baul and Indian Cinema (Bollywood)'
All the while, they try to dismiss Purna Das Baul as a mere "shilpi Baul," stealing this lineage's songs and either attributing them to the wrong poet or omitting the poet's name entirely. Baul history was once solely associated with music; now, they are trying to rework and control the historical narratives, primarily by making Baul random and generic through podcast appearances where what they say is simply incorrect.
Bauls have specific names. If you are going to use something from this Baul lineage's history, state where you got the information and be truthful. Stop the intellectual property theft of this lineage by making Baul generic. Regarding Baul and Tarapith, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul is the only Baul who performed sadhana there—that is Baul history. Many tried to copy him, "hanging out" at Tarapith and singing this lineage's songs, or more recently, emerging "out of the woodwork with woodwork" (meaning, newly manufactured claims).
Baul history includes Purna Das Baul, Manju Dasi, and KD Babu Kishan's association with the London Library, Museum, and The Royal Albert Hall since the early 1970s and 1980s. They were the only Bauls associated with Bob Dylan. And KD Babu Kishan is the only reason you can listen to Bob Dylan in India and Asia today, as he is the only Baul ever to work or have a career in Indian Cinema (Bollywood) for 40 years, releasing all of Bob Dylan's music in India and Asia through CBS India in the 1980s and 1990s. There is a documented history there.
Baul history belongs exclusively to the indigenous ancestral Bauls. It should never be made into a "no-name brand." Baul received a Padma Shree, and those Bauls have a name: Purna Das Baul. Do not use or tell the stories of this lineage to bolster yourselves if you are not a Baul, but a "fake shilpi Baul" duping people to take advantage of the tradition.
Only this lineage has pioneered Baul worldwide through Cultural programs since the 1950s, and in India since Nabani Das Khyapa Baul became the first Baul ever to sing on stages across India as part of the freedom movement for Nehru, well before India's inauguration in 1947.
Krishnendu Das Baul (KD Babu Kishan) has been teaching Baul worldwide since the 1970s, including Bhakti Yoga, Tantra, Indian Philosophy, and Indian music, because he is qualified, he did the work, and he is indigenous to Baul. He was a Monk in the Ramakrishna Mission for 12 years and fundraised for the Ramakrishna Mission. He is the only Baul in Baul history to have a relationship with the Ramakrishna Mission. He is also the Baul who first wrote about Baul Tattvas. It is unbelievable how this Baul history can be usurped, reworked, and claimed by any "fake Bauls."
Stop inventing "firsts" in Baul. Baul history is complete; there are no more "firsts." Nabani Das Khyapa Baul is the first Baul to sing solo in Calcutta. Furthermore, you can stop the theft of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul's styles of dance, Ektara, Baya, and Nupoor. The historical truth is that your "fake Guru" copied it from Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. This copying and claiming must cease; this fakery must stop. It wouldn't be such a problem if the narratives weren't so demonstrably false. Many villagers sing Baul songs, and many perform as Bauls and even ask for donations, but they do not try to create cults by exploiting the Baul name.
The Unwavering Truth: KD Babu Kishan and the Authentic Baul Lineage
Krishnendu Das Baul, also known as Babu Kishan (BabuKishan.org), is not merely an Indian music composer; he is the only authentic, qualified, and certified Indian music composer in this specific context of Baul. He did not live his life or meticulously preserve Baul for over 60 years for imposters to emerge with false narratives, dressed in costumes, presenting themselves as if they lived his life, and remaking the stories of his lineage—the stories of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and his own life. It is insidious that they render these rich histories "random" and "generic" so that fake, "pretendian," non-indigenous shilpi Baul "wanna-bes" can appear with fabricated Baul Gurus and fake Baul lineages, lying to attract followers.
This has gone too far over the past decade, if not longer. The truth must now be told boldly. While today's situation isn't entirely unprecedented, the current "fake it 'til you make it" Bauls are more sophisticated. Previously, everyone recognized them as mere singers. Today, however, they are appropriating every association from this lineage and advertising themselves by exploiting this lineage's lived experiences.
Debunking False Narratives and Protecting Intellectual Property
False narratives and false associations are replacing the full and final "firsts and lasts" of Baul from this authentic lineage. These imposters use fragments of truth, incorporating every possible association this lineage has lived. They even read from this blog, use terms like "lineage," then twist them to invent fake lineages with fake Baul Gurus, even when there's proof these individuals are not genuine Baul Gurus.
Consider some of these false narratives: the repeated, incorrect claim that there are "4 or 5 types of Baul" (Sai, Aul, Dervish, Fakir, Shah). This is fundamentally wrong. There is no such thing as a Muslim or Islamic Baul. This concept was created purely for fundraising purposes. Lalon Fakir was not a Baul; he was a poet. He did not practice Baul sadhana or live the Baul way of life. These distinctions matter. Babu Kishan was the first to record Lalon's poetry in the early 1970s. He brought Bangladeshi singers to Calcutta and recorded them, and had his father Purna Das Baul sing some of the poetry for which KD Babu Kishan composed original tunes, as they previously lacked melodies. These "fake Bauls" later copied these songs, mistakenly believing them to be original Baul songs. The same applies to Bava Pagla; he regularly visited their home to spend time with Purna Das Baul and to have KD Babu Kishan record music for his poetry. People are often so oblivious, readily assuming and fabricating myths to fit the narrative they wish to push. Similarly, Monohar Kepa was not a Baul; he was a poet and a friend of this lineage. Other "pretendian Bauls" associated with him, hoping to gain a fraction of his fame or Vaishnava essence. He was not a Baul. KD Babu Kishan knows that he composed tunes for Monohar Kepa's poetry, and Monohar Kepa also frequently visited their Calcutta home; I believe he even knew Nabani Das Khyapa Baul.
Bauls are not nomads. This is another widely spread falsehood, often propagated by academics. Do they truly not understand what a nomad is?
Baul history and her-story are complete and final. You can stop fabricating it, because, first and foremost, you are not a Baul. Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Purna Das Baul were the first to sing solo songs in Calcutta. What on earth is going on? There are no more "firsts," and to be included in any "first," you must first be a Baul!
The True Essence of Baul: Indigenous, Ancestral, and Community-Rooted
Bauls are Vaishnava Hindu poets, teachers, Baul Gurus, and healers. Without the villagers of Birbhum, there is no Baul; they are intricately joined. Bauls are an integral part of the villages of Birbhum, serving as healers, peacemakers, teachers, adhering to the principles of "feed all, love all, help all." They are an ancient Baul Guru indigenous people rooted in Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism). Baul has been watered down and oversimplified to encompass all the myth-makers, including "fake pretendian Bauls," journalists, and academic scholars.
There is no "Baul essence" to what they parrot like a broken record. They lack adhikara (authentic authority), do not understand the nuances or distinctions, and twist the tradition to portray themselves as "saviors of Baul." What for? For collecting donations, fundraising for jackpots, international travel, recording contracts, and the lucrative "Ma and Baba business." They act virtuously, as if perhaps they are the new coming of Vivekananda, or even another Ma like Anandamayi Ma.
True Bauls do not "collect people"; they share their wisdom, allowing what resonates to take root. Yet, these imposters cast a wide net, covering every aspect of this lineage's already lived lives. There is far too much chaos and confusion among these "fake authorities" on Baul. We have proof that their "Guru" is not even a Baul Guru, and they possess no authentic lineage. However, they do have a gimmick for attraction.
Reclaiming and Preserving Baul's Integrity
If the reclamation of indigenous Baul—this one and only lineage, this Guru-shishya parampara Sampradaya—is not accurate, it will be so reduced and confused that no one will remember the truth. There is no other parampara for Baul, and Baul is certainly not a Yoga parampara, nor would it be called a Siddha parampara. Only Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was a Baul Avadhuta, and in that capacity, he was associated with Bama (Vama) Kepa and the Naths. Regular Bauls are not. You people are using everything from this lineage, and that is indigenous fraud. There will be no more silence; your charade has gone too far.
Even Vishva Bharti University today is so incompetent that they don't remember who Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was. An art historian doesn't recognize that a simple statue of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul by Ramkinkar Baij needs protection and cannot even identify the sculptor. They no longer know who is a Baul and who is not. They do not know the secret nuances and distinctions of what and who Baul is anymore. Everyone is merely play-acting, using this lineage's history, remaking their history with fake Baul Gurus and fake lineages—this is pure myth-making. If Baul is not correctly and accurately preserved by an indigenous Baul who lived the stories, it will be wiped from the earth through false narratives and the theft of its intellectual property. There will be too much indigenous fraud, watering down Baul, reducing its authentic secrets, and Baul will be lost to time.
Not only is this disturbing to indigenous Baul, it is heartbreaking and breaks the very essence of Baul. Nakal fake shilpiactor Bauls don't care; they are not from Baul. It's not their ancestry; they are not indigenous, but come from other parts of India and from middle-class families. Adorned with a fake Baul Guru and a fake lineage, they are not from Baul. They create a patchwork of false narratives and throw it out to see if their act sticks; if not, they move on to the next false narrative. They expect people to "touch their feet" as if they are the almighty new "Ma and Sri Shri."
The Looming Threat of AI and the Call for Accountability
Today, with AI, this fakery will further muddy the waters of Baul and completely destroy all indigenous practices by watering them down and reducing their intellectual property into one-liners of false associations, usually to attract people into the lucrative "Baba and Ma" business. For more information:
It will soon be too late to have an accurate history or her-story. There are too many outsiders and fakes who are specifically determined to undermine and destroy accurate Baul history, simply because they are desperate to become a "Baba" or "Ma."
It used to be Academia and scholarly false narratives, viewing everything through a colonized lens, which is still a huge threat to Baul through speculations and false narratives copied and pasted from one incorrect book to another, acting as authority and trying to self-determine who is Baul. However, now there are more than one or two distinct threats to Baul.
It was only this lineage who pioneered Baul throughout India and the world; there is a story that has never been fully told or remembered. Baul has even been tampered with through internet algorithm manipulation. These false narratives and fake Bauls will impact the truth concerning artificial intelligence (AI). It has become an absolute necessity to reclaim the truth of this one and only indigenous pioneering Guru-shishya parampara sampradaya. The truth and self-determination of Baul can only be achieved through the indigenous ancestral Baul. At this point, no outsider should be using Baul.
This is KD Babu Kishan's mission and goal for over 60 years: to reclaim who the Bauls truly are and to expose all the fakes who are not being honest, who are stealing the intellectual property from this lineage. This lineage has no association with the current fakery of Baul. It has no association with the "dreadlocked gimmick" of Baul. No one should be using the songs, style, dance, or any association of the already lived lives of this lineage in regards to Baul. Conduct your "Baba and Ma business," but do not use anything from this lineage.
No "random Bauls" (fake "pretendian hawker Bauls")—no generically self-proclaimed "Baul Masters" (which do not exist)—should be using the songs, style, dress, or any of the already lived stories or associations of this one and only lineage of Baul. The nuances of this ancient Baul lineage are subtle, delicate, and precise, making them difficult to analyze. Generalization, randomization, and making Baul generic is insidious.
Their goal is to usurp the adhikara (indigenous authority) of Baul by making it random, by throwing out whatever might work in their favor, changing tactics if one doesn't work, replacing fake narratives with ancient Baul for only one purpose: the "hawker business."
As one person from the 1970s labeled them, the "fake it 'til you make it Bauls" now traveling the world for decades are not Bauls; they are "hawker Bauls." Some are closer to this lineage, others so far removed, using the "Das Baul" name and "Baul" as a path to fame, even though they've appropriated the tradition and created tear-jerking stories about their "guru"—his power, his holiness—when he wasn't even a Baul. Because of all this fakery, we are now telling the real truth and stories, like how this "fake Baul Guru" poisoned Baul Samrat Purna Das Baul.
Oh yes, the real stories will be told. You will learn the truth for the sake of the correct preservation of indigenous Baul. Their nefarious activities in the name of Baul (Vayu Tula)—the intellectual identity theft, the stolen or reconstructed indigenous wisdom, everything Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul) has accomplished over six decades and inherited from his ancient indigenous people—has been appropriated, stolen, and reworked. It is beyond belief; you cannot make this up anymore, and we cannot allow this fakery, reductionism, and watering down of the essence of who and what Baul is to continue. So, we will boldly call out the culprits, whether it is popular or not.
The purpose and Krishnendu Das Baul (KD Babu Kishan)'s legacy, consistently for over 60 years, has been to preserve Baul accurately, as requested by his Gurus and grandparents, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Brajabala Dasi, who were the last Baul Avadhuts and both the last pure, Vaishnava, untainted indigenous Bauls (Vayu Tula) to walk on Earth. No one should be faking Baul anymore; it is over.
However, the fakes continue to "ride on the coattails" of this lineage. This began in the 1970s when a group of refugees from Bangladesh became known as the "fake it 'til you make it Bauls" because they copied all of Purna Das Baul's songs from the radio. He was a popular Baul and Indian singer, the first famous vocalist to travel the world as a representative of Indian culture. These fakes then copied his dress, dance, instruments, went where he went, and began recording music as this lineage, copying their songs. There are actually laws against this in the West; however, India is further behind. Still, it doesn't make it ethical or acceptable when the first tenet of Baul is to tell the truth (satya). These fake Bauls took whatever they could to survive; perhaps that is why nothing was said. However, today we live in a different world.
Do what you want; be an authority on yourself, lie, cheat, do whatever you have to, but cease and desist in copying Babu Kishan's already lived life, reworking his stories to fit the agendas of your "Ma and Baba business," and play-acting. It doesn't matter how popular these "pretendians" are as social media influencers; it will never make them authentic. When you invent a fake Baul Guru and a fake lineage, you are nothing more than a liar.
Permission to use any of the intellectual property of this lineage is not granted. Stop using this lineage's style of dance, dress, songs, kirtans, and their indigenous history. If you are not indigenous to Baul, you have no right to self-determine who Baul is or use Baul as your way to social media fame, world travel, or even to teach in the name of Baul. You will be exposed.
You've already read the copyright notices for years and still felt entitled to poach whatever you wanted (where is the satyaand consciousness in these activities?), using stories from this blog that only could have been told by Babu Kishan. Stealing the songs and kirtans directly off his YouTube channel and from Purna Das Baul's recordings or from the radio? Do you honestly think we are that stupid?
We are not related. Baul is not related to "hawker Bauls." Do not research here and assume we are them; there is no relation, no association. So, if you are coming to this blog to learn about some other traveling "Ma" or "Baba" self-titled Bauls, they are not Baul, and we have no association with them. I am not talking about villagers of Bengal or roadside street singers; these songs were meant for you. I am talking about the fake "wanna-be expansionists" who re-record Baul songs, the fake "pretendian Bauls" who are lying and duping the public. This is insidious. The ones who have invented fake lineages and fake Baul Gurus, who have systematically told lies in the name of Baul while exploiting this lineage—these are the ones destroying Baul. The internet "Ma and Baba" aiming to be the second coming of Vivekananda, poaching, twisting, acting on steroids, spewing whatever false narrative will stick. These are "hawker Bauls." They appear sweet, always smiling, and looking very humble with dreadlocks, leading people to believe they must be authentic. Well, there is another side, and we are guilty of ignoring this for far too long. Please, understand the implications for future generations.
The Digital Battlefield: Unmasking "Pretendian" Bauls and Intellectual Theft
You've hit on a crucial point: the internet, with its opaque algorithms and the insidious use of bots, has become a breeding ground for this kind of deception. It's difficult to comprehend how people can fall for such blatant marketing and exploitation of an indigenous people, yet it happens.
Authentic Bauls are anything but meek. They are loud, noisy, and critically outspoken against this kind of performative stupidity. They possess an energetic fire, a dangerous wit that calls out ignorance and theft, and a fighting spirit coupled with the intellect and discernment to back their claims. Like Krishna and Kali, Bauls are armed with the spirit to stand and fight. In stark contrast, the fakes are "drippy, slithery, and slimy crooked actors," ensnaring young people in what can only be described as a cult mentality. It's a pathetic display of fakery.
Real Bauls are not social media experts; they don't understand how algorithms filter and recommend content. This is why our next step, after Babu Kishan's fourth book is published, is to acquire a social media expert to disseminate the truth about Baul. Our goal is not to "collect people"; our sole aim is the correct preservation of this lineage and to halt the pervasive abuse and fakery that has flooded the internet and duped individuals for far too long. We don't want you to "join us"; this was never the intention of Baul. All Baul desires is peace and for you to look within and embrace your own energetic power.
These insidious fakes continue to poach and manipulate the minds of unsuspecting individuals, twisting everything from this lineage—songs, style, dance, kirtans, and Baul history—into promotional material to "collect people." Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul), in his energetic fire, wants nothing to do with what he calls "hawker Bauls." He finds their ease of lying degrading and asserts they have no legitimate ground to even discuss Baul.
"Pretendians" and the Erasure of Indigenous Identity
As you rightly emphasize, Cultural Misappropriation equals Indigenous Genocide. It leads to the deletion of Indigenous ancestral Bauls, replaced by "pretendian Bauls."
The documentary "Pretendians," made in Canada (
The "wokism of the world" has indeed blurred lines, allowing individuals to self-identify as anything from animals to professional titles like "Yogis" or "music composers" (the Ph.D. of music), and even members of every indigenous group. The problem with self-identification in the context of indigenous Baul, or any indigenous group, is that it strips away the self-determination and opportunities of these marginalized communities. When indigenous people are not the authentic representatives of their ancient ancestry and are replaced by outsiders who merely copy their dress, style, songs, and narratives, the very survival of these groups is threatened because the authentic essence is lost.
Moving Beyond Self-Identification: The Call for Verification
As articulated in the McMaster University analysis (
These opportunities include grants, funding, awards, prestige, and opportunities specifically set aside to help marginalized indigenous communities.
Lawyer Jean Teillet further explains the types of fraudsters (
As Teillet's report emphasizes (
The "Hawker Baul" Phenomenon: Deceit and Exploitation
It may sound petty, but this is a serious issue: there are "pretendian Bauls" and their social media minions who have been telling Babu Kishan's personal lived stories about Nabani and name-dropping Bob Dylan's name as if they actually know him – they don't. They're telling stories from this blog that only he has ever shared here. This is identity theft and intellectual property theft, copying his life, his travels, his lived experiences bit by bit, copying Purna Das Baul and Nabani Das Baul, and fabricating fake Baul Gurus and fake Baul lineages (all of which can be proven and are documented). Just because something "looks exotic" doesn't mean it's authentic; the more "exotic" a person looks, the more likely they are fake, relying on costume. If you're genuinely interested in Baul, you must be smarter than superficial social media charm.
Unfortunately, this is a real phenomenon concerning the new wave of social media-famed "pretendian Baul actors," sometimes called "Baul artists" or "Baul Masters."
Appreciation and Appropriation are two completely different things. The dangers of untruths already perpetuated by fake "hawker pretendian Bauls" include reductionism, watering down, and abusing the intellectual property of this one and only lineage of Baul. They twist their fabricated stories to claim supremacy over Baul. They start by poaching one detail, grow bolder, thinking no one is watching, no one cares, no one knows. Next, they rework history, drop one-liners about historical snippets, and suddenly they are the "authority," changing their names to "Sri Sri" and becoming "experts" in Baul. It can be very subtle. This is no different from what has happened in the West with Yoga and Tantra: individuals take a few courses and are suddenly "expert Yogis," while the indigenous essence of Yoga is lost. The nuances disappear, and what they present bears no resemblance to the authentic tradition. It becomes a marketable product, and they become the "experts" who "invented" and "brought Baul to the West." This is a scam, a lie, an untruth, an inauthentic acting game exploiting this lineage. So, if you read it here and think others are doing the same, understand they are "riding on the coattails" of this lineage. They are not Baul; they are using Baul and have been doing so for decades.
The Mission: Authentic Archiving and Exposure
Our mission is to archive Baul accurately and authentically from a firsthand indigenous source for the ancestors and future generations interested in indigenous Baul Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) and the authentic, correctly nuanced Baul source. The practices and stories of this lineage—the "oldest and only" lineage of Baul who pioneered and preserved Baul (Vayu Tula) for thousands of years—are distinct. Therefore, if you are reading this and think it pertains to "fake Bauls," it has nothing to do with them. This is the only lineage whose members are truly Bhakti Yogis, and it is the only lineage of Baul Kirtan. From what I have observed, researched, documented, and learned from listening to Babu Kishan 24/7 during this time, "hawker Bauls" only water down and reduce Baul and are devoid of its essence. Individuals like Rodham and Parvathy are in the "Baba and Ma business," a game to claim and seize authority over Baul, to "collect people" and fundraise for financial jackpots. They constantly morph and twist their narratives, but the fact remains: she has appropriated songs from this lineage, she dances in Nabani Das's style using the Ektara and Baya, and wears his specific style of ankle bells (Nupoor). Everything is copied from this lineage. How can this be explained? If Babu Kishan did not speak out, who would know? The copying and appropriating fundamentally contradict the reality they present.
A Call to Public Awareness and Legal Action
This may be a rough draft, but its urgency cannot be overstated. If we don't speak out now, these "fake Bauls" will make YouTube videos poaching Baul content directly from the writings on this blog, which are meticulously documented in our files and will be made public. This has gone on for far too long. This is what happens when dishonest individuals lack shame or a sense of truth.
Copyright, no poaching and plagiarizing for YouTube videos. This unfortunately must be brought to public attention, because Jackpot fundraising and donation collecting when you are not indigenous to Baul is indigenous fraud.Fundraising to "preserve Baul" when Baul has already been preserved by this lineage, and specifically by Babu Kishan for over 60 years, is indigenous fraud and indigenous intellectual property theft. So, think twice next time you steal a Baul song from this lineage or directly from Babu Kishan's YouTube channel and feel entitled to re-record it. We will now openly call all of this out; it has gone on for too long. In this Kali Yuga, "what is real appears as false, and what is false appears as real." Stop indigenous fraud.
As the legal context highlights: “Their adoption of Indigenous identities allows them access to jobs, money, and opportunities that are set aside for Indigenous people. Pretendians raise issues with respect to employment/labour law, charter, and privacy issues. It also calls into question recent Supreme Court of Canada case law. These identity issues – whether it is an individual right to identify as Indigenous, whether the Indigenous nation has any say, whether there are any necessary requirements to claim an Indigenous identity – are very much in the spotlight as writers, filmmakers, lawyers, and academics are exposed in the press for having little or no right to the Indigenous identities they have been claiming. Some have made these dubious claims for decades and have built fame, prestige, and careers on them."
This one and only lineage does not follow others; others follow them. These "pretendian Baul actors" fabricate stories, teach false narratives, while "riding on the coattails" of this lineage. This has been proven, and I possess hundreds of documented examples and proof.
Understanding "Hawker Bauls"
Babu Kishan describes these types of people, the "pretendian Bauls," as "HAWKERS." I didn't understand until he explained that those who constantly change their story are hawkers; they do whatever brings attention. If one approach doesn't work, they move on to the next, at all costs. This is not new; it has been going on for decades and likely started with their self-proclaimed, so-called "Baul Gurus."
"Baul Hawkers" are random, wandering people with no roots in Baul. They watched us closely, learned our songs, then followed us where we traveled in India and worldwide. They copied our style—Nabani Das Khyapa Baul's style in every way, including dance, the Ektara (or Gopi Chand/Gopi Yantra, unique to this lineage), the Baya (the drum tied around the waist), and his and Purna Das Baul's (only) style of ankle bells called Nupoor (ankle bells encased in metal), our dress, songs, Baul Kirtans, and our style of Baul Vaishnava Sahajiya Bhakti Yoga that only comes from this lineage.
Even Baul Tantra has emerged "out of the woodwork with woodwork" (meaning, newly manufactured claims from nowhere). No other "fake Bauls" ever talked about Kirtan! Our songs are being taken and re-recorded without permission directly from YouTube, the radio, or past albums recorded solely by this lineage. They boldly feel entitled to take whatever they want, listening to and re-recording, acting out the songs in our style while attributing the entire lot to a fake Baul Guru. Copied directly from Babu Kishan's (Krishnendu Das Baul's) YouTube channel and off the radio.Without permission, they re-recorded our songs, without giving credit, and removing our names.
They use our stories, making them "random." By "random," we mean removing the names of the Bauls who lived these stories as an example: even Baul's association with Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Mission, Anandamayi Ma, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, and the Rolling Stones. These "fake random Bauls" had nothing to do with these historical figures; only very specific Bauls with names—Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and Babu Kishan—were involved. These are their stories to tell; "random Bauls" had nothing to do with this Baul history.
If not for Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul), no random "pretendian Baul" would have anything to appropriate or any reason to steal the intellectual property of this lineage. Do not be fooled; stay away from the cult mentality. "Hawkers are hawkers," and this is what they do: they sell Baul as a commodity to gain recording contracts, free press, and trips around the world, displaying their wares to anyone who will be ensnared.
This lineage has many "firsts and lasts" regarding Baul. Just observe how these imposters copy and try to present themselves as if they are the ones, while they meticulously copy every aspect of the indigenous Bauls—this lineage's already lived lives. It is not a joke; it is a puzzle I have assembled, documented, and have proof of. There is a clear difference between appreciation of indigenous Baul and serious appropriation.
These "hawkers" take every aspect of the lineage Bauls' lives and re-display it, acting as if they were the ones, reworking the already lived history of this lineage. They tell you they are "masters" and will teach you, acting as if they know Baul. They do not; they copied it directly from this lineage, from Babu Kishan's life's work. They are always waiting for a new song, a new word, a new chapter from a book to teach. I have documented one "fake Baul" listing all the chapters in Babu Kishan's father's book, "Baul Philosophy," advertising the titles of the chapters as what they would be teaching in workshops. You literally cannot make this up!
First, it's about tone and music, even Indian Cinema. Then, "Bauls are monks," "Bauls are from Turkey," then "Buddhism," then "Lalon," then "Ramakrishna," "Anandamayi Ma"—when they have done none of the work. They are copying Babu Kishan's life. They use any idea from the lived history of this lineage, rework it for social media pictures, and claim they are "legendary Bauls." I have documented everything presented by these fake "pretendian Bauls" on the internet for over 20 years. Babu Kishan has documented all the fakery for over 60 years.
If Babu Kishan had not written anything over decades about Baul, they would know nothing about Baul; they would not have a story to claim. This is because their "fake Guru" copied everything from this lineage, and they feel entitled to do the same without the indigenous or ancestral adhikara (authentic lineage of Baul, entitlements, competence, or authority) to do so. Make no mistake, the authority of a lineage or sampradaya only lies within the lineage of Baul. There is no other lineage of Baul. Babu Kishan is the first to ever talk about lineage regarding Baul, and then every random, wandering "fake Baul" suddenly claims a fake lineage with a fake Baul Guru. Babu Kishan knew these so-called self-titled "Baul Gurus"; he documented who they are and knows their stories of where they came from. Their lineage is a fake lineage, and it can be proven.
"Hawkers" have big smiles, trying to recruit others while saying "come and join them." When Bauls do not "collect people," that should tell you enough. Are they fundraising or asking for donations? Those are the "Hawkers." They have even created "foundations" copied word for word from our original, first Baul foundation. "Hawkers" are idea thieves; they are hunters ready to poach whatever they can, trying to stitch it all together into a new product to sell.
"Hawkers" change their methods of acting when one idea doesn't work. They shift directions—maybe they will be Tantrics promoting Tara Ma one minute, then Bhakti Yogis or associated with Ramakrishna or Anandamayi Ma the next, even though only this lineage has lived this history.
"Hawker Bauls" call themselves "Baul Artists" one minute and "Baul Masters" the next, and frankly, you wouldn't know the difference. "Hawker Bauls" always have a new scheme when the last one failed; they keep churning out schemes. "Fake Bauls" are not the only "hawkers" today. Throughout Indian spirituality, there are "hawkers" with stories that would blow your mind, yet they have no real ground to base their stories on—just a game.
They give flippant advertising stories and one-liners, bragging about how much they travel. This is not Baul, and not based on any Baul reality, but on social media pictures and the accumulation of "likes" on social media.

Historical Autobiography of Baul

Reclaiming the Indigenous Ancestral Heritage of the
Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Bauls of Birbhum
BAUL TANTRA- MANTRA- GOPI YANTRA

by Trishula S Das as told by Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das (Chand Gosia) Das Baul
-----------------------------------------------------
Reclaiming the Narrative: The Unstoppable Voice of Krishnendu Das Baul (Babu Kishan)
In 1986 Los Angeles, California, USA, George Harrison hosted a book release party for Babu Kishan's third book on Baul. This book was edited by Lila Roy, Rabindranath Tagore's personal translator and editor. George Harrison was a close friend of Babu Kishan's, as was the sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar. This is just one testament to the global reach and esteemed connections of this one and only Vaishnava Sahajiya Baul lineage, which represents indigenous Bhakti Yoga, tracing its roots back even before Sri Chaitanya.
The new "pretendian" non-indigenous Bauls never historically used terms like Bhakti Yoga, Kirtan, Tantra, or Tara Ma. Yet, as time progresses, a new breed of fake "pretendian Bauls" are "riding on the coattails" of every song and every aspect of this authentic lineage, twisting it into their fabricated stories and lineages. This is blatant plagiarism of the intellectual property of this unique Baul lineage. Vaishnava Baul Kirtan is a very specific tradition that originates solely from this pioneering family.
This lineage represents the roots of Gosai Das Baul and Dasi Bhakti, ancient indigenous people who possess the right to their own self-determination. It is indigenous fraud to appropriate their achievements, their travels, their songs, their style of dance, their dress, their Kirtans, and every aspect of their pioneering spirit, while removing their names and proclaiming that self-titled actors are the true inheritors. The era of "fake it 'til you make it" and "riding on the coattails" of this lineage is over. Copying from this lineage and from this blog is poaching and intellectual property theft.
This is the indigenous ancestral lineage of Sri Nityananda of Ekachakra, Birbhum, West Bengal, India. For further historical context, refer to:
The Audacity of Theft: False Narratives and Shameless Appropriation
Do not plagiarize Babu Kishan's (Krishnendu Das Baul's) lived life stories, nor his ancestors' songs and kirtans, including their historical travels and accomplishments that are already completed Baul history, nor his lyrics or the lyrical poems of this "one and only lineage." Of course, it sounds insane that this must be explicitly stated, but this is the reality today. Just because someone has achieved social media fame does not mean it has been earned through telling the truth. Satya (truth) is the first tenet of Baul, yet sadly, people today are following fakes who use Baul to fundraise and collect donations in the name of Baul.
While removing the names of the indigenous Bauls from the narrative, these fake "pretendian" so-called Bauls are traveling the globe, creating false narratives that shift every time Babu Kishan reveals a new piece of Baul history. They don't care whether the information comes from YouTube videos or any other source; these fakes simply take it, rearrange their style and talking points to align with our blog or websites.
It is an outright lie to claim there are "20,000 Bauls left in Birbhum, West Bengal." This is 100% false, and you will be publicly called out and exposed soon. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all of the time. Unfortunately, today, you can fool many people as we delve deeper into the "post-truth era," and these individuals do so with no shame. No shame implies a lack of true consciousness.
The Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Bauls of Birbhum, West Bengal, India, are 'indigenous ancestral' Vaishnava Tantric Bhakti Yogis and Yoginis on the path of the Avadhuta. Baul Kirtan and Baul Bhakti Yoga originate solely from this lineage. They have been poached from this lineage, and this poaching has intensified "on steroids" over the past two decades. Thank God, I haven't released the chapters on 'Baul Bhakti Yoga,' because everything Babu Kishan has written over decades, and everything I have written on this blog, has been poached. It is beyond bizarre. Everything I have written on this blog has been poached.
Compare what is written here with what is currently being promoted elsewhere. It's important to understand why Baul is secret, and perhaps I have revealed too much. Babu Kishan warned me. I just didn't think this level of shamelessness was possible from "pretendian Baul actors" in this post-truth era. Every aspect of their original activities, right down to their contacts, has been replicated.
Baul is only synergistically connected within Hinduism (Sanatan Dharma), Indian Philosophy, Bhakti, Kirtan, Vedas, and Tantra of Birbhum. This ancestral lineage represents the only Krishna and Dattatreya Sahaja, the only Vaishnava Sahajiya Bauls. There is no other lineage, and no other Vaishnava Sahajiya Bhakti Yoga and Kirtan Bauls have a legitimate claim. What I write here is then poached from here or from this lineage.
This lineage is the only Bhakti Yoga, Kirtan Baul path, and it has only ever been mentioned by Babu Kishan. The terms "Das Baul and Dasi (Gosai)" regarding Baul exclusively come from this ancestral lineage, indigenous to Birbhum Bauls, who are now near extinction. It is only through this lineage that anyone genuinely knows anything about Baul. To fabricate fake lineages and fake Baul Gurus is seriously disturbed.
It has become a fashion for "pretendian Bauls" to copy and "ride on the coattails of this lineage." Do not be fooled by these fake Bauls; they are adept at social media and skilled actors, having practiced this for a considerable time. Their lives, songs, and all the "firsts" of this lineage have been plagiarized for far too long.
The Erosion of Authenticity: Baul Bhakti Yoga and The "Baba/Ma" Business
This is crucial to understand: now that Bhakti Yoga has gained popularity in the West over the past two decades, and it's being advertised that "Baul Bhakti Yoga and Kirtan" are being taught, you must understand that these individuals have no roots in Baul and are merely Baul actors. They have poached this knowledge from Babu Kishan's (Krishnendu Das Baul's) blog and websites. One day they claim to be Buddhist, the next they act like Radha, and now they are Krishna. They snatch whatever they can from the writings of this blog and Babu Kishan's past work. He knows who they call their "Baul Guru," and those individuals are not Baul. These imposters are armed with fake Baul lineages and fake Baul Gurus, all while using the intellectual property of this indigenous Baul lineage.
I have meticulously documented Baul for almost 20 years, observing what has been happening regarding Baul and documenting what has been appropriated from this lineage. The "pretendian Bauls" have repeatedly engaged in the intellectual theft of songs, kirtans, and everything this lineage has accomplished—their history copied, their names removed, and new fake lineages created, including fabricated Baul Gurus. They even attempt to associate themselves with Babu Kishan's career in Indian Cinema.
Remember, Baul does not "collect people."
I know it sounds outrageous, but Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul) has been on this path for almost 60 years, both within India and extensively outside, especially in the USA, where he taught Bhakti Yoga for decades. He even founded a Baul institution in California in the 1980s and 1990s, only to see it destroyed by his own brother. He has done the work, while others merely skim everything he has already completed as part of Baul history, which is full and final.
Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul) has been on this path for over 60 years as an indigenous Baul from the very soul and soil of Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
Copyright and Calling Out the Fraud
Copyright, as told by 'Krishnendu Das Baul' (Babu Kishan), who has preserved Baul for more than 60 years, was instrumental in pioneering Baul globally, establishing many "firsts and lasts" in Baul history and her-story. Babu Kishan is the eldest grandchild of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Brajabala Dasi, his initiating Gurus, and the eldest son of Purna Das Baul and Manju Das, the first and only famous Baul singers in India and globally. Before Nabani, no Baul ever sang on a stage.
Copyright: No poaching the stories lived by and only as told by Babu Kishan, his (Indian Cinema) name, and his birth name as given by Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, 'Krishnendu Das Baul' (Gosia Chand). "Krishnendu" means "Krishna's Moon" (Chandra or Chand). Baul is indigenous and ancestral only to the soul and soil of Birbhum. We are very serious about the copying and intellectual theft that has been occurring for decades regarding Baul; it has become an epidemic with some "pretendian fake Bauls" who are not indigenous to Baul.
There is no such thing as a "Baul Master," "Baul Artist," "Western Baul," "Muslim Baul," "Bauls of Bangladesh," or "Fakir Baul." Baul is not from Persian, Uzbekistan, or Turkey; to claim so is 'indigenous identity theft.' The toxic re-twisting, reworking, and creation of false narratives, fake Baul Gurus, and fake "pretendian lineages" is indigenous fraud.
It is completely bizarre how outsiders have used and abused Baul, either for a copycat singing career (because Purna Das Baul was the first famous Baul to travel the world) or, now, how fakes are fundraising for financial jackpots, claiming they will "preserve Baul" or "build Baul ashrams around the world," when Baul has already been preserved in every way—tradition, dress, instruments, songs, practices. This lineage's Baul histories are already lived, completed, and final. Baul is complete. There is no need for any random, non-indigenous fake "pretendian Bauls" to steal the indigenous intellectual property of these Bauls by copying their style, songs, and dance, reworking them, and pretending that these fakes are the ones who lived the stories, by fabricating false associations such as teaching at Universities, having attended or been interested in the Ramakrishna Mission, and being "Music composers" with loose associations to Indian Cinema (Bollywood). This is absurd, as Babu Kishan is the only "first and last" Baul to have an actual 40-year career in Indian Cinema at all levels of management and as a music composer and filmmaker. They are truly trying to fake and cover all their bases to compete with Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and Babu Kishan, hoping to be recognized on social media as a "big self-titled Baul Master"—which they are not, and there is no such thing. When your "Guru" is a fake Baul Guru and you have fabricated a lineage that does not exist but copied everything from this lineage, that is indigenous fraud.
This book is about reclaiming Babu Kishan's (Krishnendu Das Baul's) own history in the recording, preservation, and global dissemination of Baul. His name has been completely erased by his family and by the "pretendian Bauls." He is reclaiming his lineage, ancestral memories, and all the work he has done regarding Baul, teaching at universities, and the songs of his lineage. He has preserved and reclaims his family's history and her-story, which have been so sorely appropriated by fake "pretendian Bauls" who have removed their names. This is indigenous identity theft and looting of the indigenous Bauls through massive fundraising jackpot schemes, falsely claiming they are going to preserve Baul while simultaneously looting this lineage, their songs, dress, style of music, travels, and accomplishments. It is Indigenous Fraud when those seeking financial jackpots are not even Baul. Do not remove the names of the Bauls. If they say "Das Baul or Dasi" and have fabricated another Baul lineage, they are fake because there is only ONE Baul lineage, and secondly, they have lied—they have not told the truth.
Included in the book is a critique of what academic scholars have written about Baul and how damaging their speculations are. They lack true knowledge; they are not trained in Baul. Baul is Vaishnava first. There is no way a Baul is a leather tanner of one generation out of the blue. Of course, people write all sorts of books, and I have critiqued many of them on lineagebaul.blogspot.com, demonstrating why they are not Baul, why they have no right to self-determine who is Baul because of their speculations and all the false narratives they have created, and why they are not indigenous to Baul. Their ancestors have not preserved Baul; they do not speak or even know the languages of Baul.
Here is one example: 'Some believe he was the composer of the well-known song Hṛd Mājhāre Rākhibo Cheṛe Debo Nā, and of Kichu din mone mone, later popularized by the stunning performances of Paban Das Baul and Parvathy Das Baul.’ - Lorea. This statement is not only insulting; it is insidious and loudly needs to be called out. These two songs were written by and popularized by Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and his son Purna Das Baul. They were stolen from recordings produced by Babu Kishan in the 1970s. They were popularized and composed by this lineage; they belong to the intellectual property of this lineage, used and recorded by many who never gave credit, just taken (stolen) and used for outsiders' social media fame. We live in 2025; this is unacceptable. The songs mentioned were already played on the radio all over Bengal and India. This is indigenous identity theft, indigenous fraud. Paban and Parvathy are not Bauls; they are "pretending Bauls," and Babu Kishan knows their history. Parvathy stole the song directly from Babu Kishan’s YouTube channel. We have analytics that will show how many times she listened over and over, only to see it uploaded with the wrong poet's name—Roshik, who is a nickname of a poet from this lineage. The true poet of those two songs was Nabani Das Khyapa Baul ("Mirror of the Sky"), and we can prove it without a shadow of a doubt. These songs were already popular, written by Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and made popular by his son when they were commercially produced by Babu Kishan and constantly heard on the radio. These songs were copied directly from this lineage's recordings, as are many others. These songs are the intellectual property of this lineage; they were taken and re-recorded while "pretendian Bauls" sang them for their own commercial success, even using the wrong poet's name to mislead or, worse, no poet's name at all. This is Baul today: lying, cheating, and acting like a Baul with the soul of thieves. Yes, Bauls do care who the poets are, and now you are going to find out just how much an indigenous ancestral Baul cares. Do not poach from this blog and then repeat the stories as if you know, because I will tell you, these stories will be told very soon.
The Vedas and Truth: A Foundational Principle for Baul
"1. The Vedas and Lies "Satyam Eva Jayate" ("Only truth triumphs.") (Rigveda 10.177.2) The Rigveda also states: "Truth brings harmony with ṛta (cosmic order), while falsehood disrupts it." Ṛta, a fundamental concept in the Vedas, represents the universal order closely linked to truth and justice.
The Upanishads and the Concept of Satya The Upanishads, the philosophical texts of the Vedic tradition, emphasize truth as the path to spiritual growth. The Chandogya Upanishad states: "Satya is Brahman." (Chandogya Upanishad 8.3.5) "Truth itself is Brahman (the Absolute Reality)." This teaching highlights that in the Vedic tradition, truth is not merely a moral virtue but a metaphysical principle. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (5.10.1) declares: "One who always speaks the truth ultimately attains moksha (liberation)."
Dharma Shastras The Dharma Shastras, such as the Manusmriti, which outlines Hindu laws, offer specific perspectives on lying. The Manusmriti (4.138) states: "Truth must always be upheld, but if a lie can save a life or prevent injustice, it may be permitted." This view suggests that while lying is generally condemned, it may be justified in rare cases for a greater purpose.
The Mahabharata and Ramayana The two great Vedic epics contain several stories illustrating the consequences of lies. Yudhishthira in the Mahabharata: Yudhishthira, renowned for his truthfulness, once spoke a half-truth in a critical situation. As a result, he immediately felt guilt and suffered negative karma. Rama in the Ramayana:Rama, the embodiment of Dharma (righteous duty), never lies, demonstrating the supreme importance of truth in the Vedic tradition. Does lying distance a person from their Dharma? In Vedic wisdom, lying is generally considered a sin because it disrupts the universal order (ṛta) and distances an individual from the ultimate truth (Brahman). However, texts such as the Manusmriti acknowledge certain circumstances where lying may be acceptable.
Overall, Vedic teachings place great emphasis on Satya (truth) as a divine principle and the path to liberation."
The Complete History of Baul: A Living Legacy
As you can infer, Baul indeed became the focal point of books, movies, and singers, and there is a profound historical story behind this one and only indigenous ancestral lineage. From Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Brajabala Dasi to Purna Das Baul and Manju Das, and finally to their eldest grandson and eldest son, the story of modern Baul and all that Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul) brought to the tradition is a complete narrative. Baul is complete; the living history has been complete for decades.
There is no need for any random non-indigenous fake "pretendian Bauls" to steal the indigenous intellectual property of these Bauls by copying their style, songs, and dance, reworking them, and pretending that these fakes are the ones who lived the stories. There is no need for them to fabricate false associations such as teaching at Universities, having attended or been interested in the Ramakrishna Mission, or being "Music composers" with loose associations to Indian Cinema (Bollywood), when Babu Kishan is the only "first and last" Baul to have an actual 40-year career in Indian Cinemaat all levels of management and as a Music Composer and Filmmaker.
He has preserved and reclaims his family history and her-story, which have been so sorely appropriated by fake "pretendian Bauls" who have removed their names. Their ancestors have not preserved Baul; they do not speak or even know the languages of Baul.
The "Strange Case of Fake Pretendian Bauls" and the Path Forward
The "strange case of 'fake pretendian Bauls'" has been very destructive to the indigenous Bauls. The appropriation, reductionism, and watering down of the songs, style, whatever they did, and following them around the world, fabricating fake lineages and fake Baul Gurus. They copied everything, removing names and pretending they lived their stories by remaking their stories and copying everything they did and where they went.
Truth quotes: Baul holds truth as the starting point: Satya is to tell the truth.
This new book offers a glimpse into Babu Kishan's fourth book on Baul (the other three are out of print), set to be released this year, 2025. This book embodies over 60 years of experience, research, preservation, and historical "firsts and lasts" lived by this lineage, chronicling the actual lives of the one and only lineage of the Vaishnava Sahajiya Bauls of Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
This is from the one and only lineage of Baul (Chand Gosia). This is the historical story lived by the last authentic indigenous Bauls who walked on Earth, with fragments of a marginalized people barely able to survive, having to compete with fake "pretendian Bauls" who come from middle-class families. In many ways, reclaiming the indigenous ancestral memories of this lineage provides a great case study in how indigenous sects in India are mistreated and usurped by outsiders who water down and reduce their legacy.
This book presents the accurate story of the lineage, with their names intact, not removed and claimed by outsiders by making the stories generic and random, as if "all Bauls" lived these stories. This new book is the story told to me over a 20-year period of listening to Babu Kishan's actual lived stories of who the Bauls truly are. No more speculation is needed; no more exploiting Baul. It stops here. This is about how this lineage brought Baul out of the villages of Birbhum, introducing and pioneering Baul to all of Bengal, to all of India, and into international global fame. The names are written in stone; no more randomizing Baul or making Baul generic while "pretendian fake Bauls" claim this lineage bit by bit, faking Baul, making false associations. The truth must be brought to light. The "Pretendian fake Bauls" have done this by fabricating fake lineages and fake Baul Gurus. It is absolutely astounding it has gone on as long as it has, for decades.
So famous, in fact, that Baul aroused and became the focal point of many famed Indian singers, actors, film producers, artists, politicians, Presidents, and international stars such as Bob Dylan and The Band, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Osho, Anandamayi Ma, Sita Ram Das Omkarnath, and many others. Yet, many so-called self-titled "experts" are talking and making false associations with these people who only associated with this lineage. They read it through Babu Kishan's writings and now have tried to repeat it. What kind of joke is this? It will be qualified in a big way when the book is released.
The "strange case of 'fake pretendian Bauls'" has been very destructive to the indigenous Bauls. The appropriation, reductionism, and watering down of the songs, style, whatever they did, and following them around the world, fabricating fake lineages and fake Baul Gurus. They copied everything, removing their names and pretending they lived their stories by remaking their stories and copying everything they did and where they went.
Actionable Steps: Protecting Indigenous Baul
Truth quotes: Baul holds truth as the starting point: Satya is to tell the truth.
This is a rough draft, still needing editing, but it's crucial to put this information out there now. If not, the "fake Bauls" will have created YouTube videos poaching Baul from the writings on this blog, all documented in my files, which will be made public. This has gone on for too long. This is what happens when dishonest people have no shame or sense of truth.
Copyright: No poaching and plagiarizing for YouTube videos. This unfortunately must be brought to the attention of the public, because Jackpot fundraising and donation collecting when you are not indigenous to Baul is indigenous fraud. Fundraising to "preserve Baul" when Baul has been preserved by this lineage and for over 60 years by Babu Kishan is indigenous fraud and indigenous intellectual property theft. So think next time you steal a Baul song from this lineage or directly from Babu Kishan's YouTube channel and feel entitled to re-record it. We will openly call all this out now; it has gone on for too long. "What is real appears as false, and what is false appears as real"—this is Kali Yuga, the time we live in. Stop indigenous fraud.
Some have made these dubious claims for decades and have built fame, prestige, and careers on them
This one and only lineage does not follow others; others follow them. These "pretendian Baul actors" fabricate stories and teach false narratives while "riding on the coattails" of this lineage. This has been proven, and I have hundreds of documented examples and proof.
Babu Kishan says these types of people, the "pretendian Bauls," are HAWKERS. I didn't understand, then he explained that those who change their story all the time are hawkers; they do whatever brings attention. If what they do doesn't work, they move on to the next thing at all costs. This is not new; this has been going on for decades and probably started with their self-proclaimed, so-called "Baul Gurus."
"Baul Hawkers" are random wandering people who have no roots in Baul. They watched us closely, learned our songs, then followed where we traveled in India and worldwide. They copied our style—Nabani Das Khyapa Baul's style in every way, including dance (Ektara or Gopi Chand/Gopi Yantra, unique to this lineage), the Baya (the drum tied around the waist), and his and Purna Das Baul's (only) style of ankle bells called Nupoor ("ankle bells encased in metal"), our dress, songs, Baul Kirtans, and our style of Baul Vaishnava Sahajiya Bhakti Yoga that only comes from this lineage.
Even Baul Tantra is now being discussed by those who emerged "out of the woodwork with woodwork" (meaning, newly manufactured claims from nowhere). No other fake Bauls ever talked about Kirtan! Our songs are taken and re-recorded without permission directly from YouTube and the radio or past albums recorded solely by this lineage. They boldly feel entitled to take whatever they want, listening to and re-recording, acting out the songs in our style while attributing the whole lot to a fake Baul Guru. Copied directly from Babu Kishan's (Krishnendu Das Baul's) YouTube channel and off the radio. Without permission, they re-recorded our songs, without giving credit, and removing our names.
They used our stories, making them "random." By "random," we mean removing the names of the Bauls who lived the stories. For example: Baul's association with Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Mission, Anandamayi Ma, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, The Rolling Stones. These fake "random Bauls" had nothing to do with these people; only very specific Bauls with names—Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and Babu Kishan—were involved.
Don't be fooled; stay away from the cult mentality. "Hawkers are hawkers," and this is what the hawkers do: they sell Baul as a commodity to gain recording contracts, free press, and trips around the world, displaying their wares to anybody who will be sucked in.
This lineage has many "firsts and lasts" regarding Baul. Just watch how they copy and try to present themselves as if they are the ones, while they copy every corner of the indigenous Bauls—this lineage's already lived lives. It is not a joke; it is a puzzle that I have put together, documented, and have proof of. There is a difference between appreciation of indigenous Baul and serious appropriation.
These "hawkers" take every aspect of the lineage Bauls' lives and re-display it, acting as if they were the ones, reworking the already lived history of this lineage. They tell you they are "masters" and they are going to teach you, and act like they know Baul. They do not; they copied it directly from this lineage, from Babu Kishan's life's work. Always waiting for a new song, a new word, a new chapter from a book to teach. I documented one fake Baul listing all the chapters in Babu Kishan's father's book "Baul Philosophy," advertising the titles of the chapters as to what they will be teaching in workshops. You literally cannot make this up!
First it is about tone and music, even Indian Cinema. Then, "Bauls are monks," "Bauls are from Turkey," then "Buddhism," then "Lalon," then "Ramakrishna," "Anandamayi Ma"—when they have done none of the work. They are copying Babu Kishan's life. They use any idea of the lived history of this lineage, rework it for social media pictures, and claim they are "legendary Bauls." I have documented everything on the internet presented by these fake "pretendian Bauls" for over 20 years. Babu Kishan has documented all the fakery for over 60 years.
If Babu Kishan had not written anything over decades about Baul, they would not know anything about Baul; they would not have a story to claim. Babu Kishan is the first to ever talk about lineage regarding Baul, and then every random, wandering "fake Baul" all of sudden has a fake lineage with a fake Baul Guru.
Those are the "Hawkers." They have made foundations copied word for word from our original first Baul foundation. "Hawkers" are idea thieves; they are hunters ready to poach whatever they can, trying to sew it all together a new product to sell.
"Hawkers" change their methods of acting when one idea does not work they change their directions, maybe they will be tantrics promoting Tara Ma one time, the next they are Bhakti Yogis or associated with Ramakrishna or Anandamayi Ma, when only this lineage has lived this history.
"Hawker Bauls" call themselves "Baul Artists" one minute and "Baul Masters" the next and really how would you know, you would not. "Hawker Bauls" have a new scheme when the last one didn't work, they keep churning out schemes. Fake Bauls are not the only hawkers today, today throughout Indian spirituality there are hawkers with stories that would blow your mind, yet they have nothing to ground their stories in, just a game.
They give flippant advertising stories and one liners bragging about how much they travel? This is not Baul, and not based on any Baul reality, but in social media pictures and the accumulation of like on social media.

Ektara Foundation was registered in Mumbai India in 2007
We have been busy with life, we have not raised any money for this foundation, although over more that for 60 years Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul has preserved Baul in every way. At this point we have just finished our book and publish it this year. Once that is done we will be more present to do the things Babu Kishan has lived a whole life to present and do regarding Baul. I suppose in some ways we have had to watch an utter disaster regarding Baul and fake Bauls to happen to truly understand the necessity to preserve Baul accurately and now reclaim his indigenous ancestral and the 6 decades he has done preserving and educating the world on indigenous Baul.
created in 2007 our vision has changed:
