The deconstruction of Baul Culture - the impact on Lineage Baul

I have noticed over the past 13 years of writing about the "Vaishnava Bauls of Birbhum" since the age of facebook and social media that what I have written has been copied. The names taken off and other names added. The idea's, terms, circumstances, concepts, stories used in new Baul singers stories, books, youtube video's, and post with no credit given but new lineages made up, a cultural appropriation not necessarily people in other countries but a cultural hijacking within Indian Culture.

Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul was the first Baul to create  a website called BabuKishan.com and he had millions of views, he started the website in the early 199o's and it was the first time people could learn about Baul on the world wide web. People copied and pasted everything he wrote all over the world, it was the first inner portal on Baul and he was fundraising for his lineage to help in his already decades of preservation on Baul his lineage.

He is the first to put Baul songs on MTV, he is the first for anything and everything regarding Baul, yet many have made up stories. Baul has been completely culturally appropriated by outsiders and by Muslims, there never ever was a such thing as a Muslim Baul, if Muslim is based on Sanatan Dharma, Yoga and Tantra we could say yes, but they are not and the watering down and reductionism is real. Baul is extinct, what is happening today is not Baul it is fake, it is drama and Baul singing. There are a few who have some keys who are more authentic but they are not seen, they are hidden, or can not make up stories and tell lies, therefore, no one knows who they are.

We have laughed over the years how people copied and pasted his story, whether it was right or wrong and he could see who was doing it. He could see every intellectual property theft.

Many started to make documentaries. Many people he thought were his friends and who he even gave the idea to about making documentaries on Baul went ahead without him.

Regarding scholarship he helped many in obtaining funding, even giving his signature and they promised to include him in the projects only to disappear and reappear with some fake Baul a token to make their project look legit. He helped many (you know who you are) fundraising from Universities, they took his lessons in Baul and Bengali and then went on to write about and create the Bauls of Bangladesh or just pushed him aside.

You see Babu Kishan is a very sincere serious guy and he believed you. This has lead to a huge distrust in any academic and they still come a calling, tell me, asking questions. I helped a scholar a year ago against Babu's warnings, yes I learned my lesson, he told me but I did not listen. Was that a mistake, yes I told everything I knew and then turned around and they used pictures of other Bauls who are not even Bauls and I will qualify this in the new book? They cut and chew and in the end the story is changed to suit their professor for a PHD, you see this is the cause to get funding or a job as a professor as the leading authority of a subject. Then others copy and paste what they write over and over, check out academia.com, it is like a competition of articles, to make themselves legit even if it is true what they write or not, just because it has been written before does not make it correct. It is mind boggling all fighting to be the one, for better funding.

Many scholars have written about the Bauls of Bengal and Babu Kishan has known them personally and qualified them because what they have written is wrong and now new scholar only copy and paste from book to book, it is like acid that burns a hole in a whole culture now deconstructing the culture.

Baul has been written about, it was easier to get funds from a University if there was a new subject or object of study. That is how many scholars have viewed Baul as an object of fundraising, so they create a Baul of Bangladesh with no clue of how this came about and that Baul is not nor never was from that area of Bengal when it was Bengal and that Lalon Fakir was a great poet, with Baul like ideas but he did not do any Baul sadhana and without Baul sadhana there is not Baul. Lets call Baba Pagla a Baul, lets call Lalon Fakir a Baul, lets pay some money to this poor family over here and they will be the centre of my research on Baul, whether they are Baul or not, no one will know?

Babu Kishan has had this problem even in his own family, sorry to say, it is about money not Baul for the sake of Baul. He is a real serious guy about his lineage and by the way no one ever used 'lineage of Baul' until I created this blog lineagebaul.blogspot.com for Babu Kishan. Babu Kishan spent decades preserving Baul and recored most of the Baul songs of his lineage, he is not just pointing fingers at others, he will be pointing fingers directly at his very own family who has played a big part in this deconstruction of Baul, there is no love lost there, but he still has deep respect for his lineage, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul & Brajabala Dasi, this truth will all come out soon and it will not be pleasant. Babu Kishan has always been a free agent and protected his family but he can not anymore. Baul is extinct.

And.. another by the way, Babu Kishan is the one who set the template, the ground, the platform for Bauls to travel around the world. He is the one who encouraged others to follow him around the world, his mother Manju Das is the first Baul women to travel outside of India, in the 1960's, yet I see others making this claim? You can not talk about Baul Women and firsts without talking about Manju Das love her or hate her, she was the only legendary Baul Women to ever travel outside of India. Baul has been extinct for about 30 years if not longer, all the rest is made up stories and lineages.

Babu Kishan brought many who follow Baul along on his own trips as musicians, now many are claiming they too have a lineage not this lineage but their own made up lineage? Their students are claiming they are lineage too?? When Babu knows exactly they were not Bauls, and their Guru never claimed lineage and the family did not even like this person because they only took and never gave back? How useful to make up a lineage of Baul, when it more likely they were kirtan-ist from Bangaldesh. Riding on the coat tails of this family and lineage.

Then you get the westerns who do not have a clue and can not make it through to Babu Kishan because he does not let people through, so instead of pushing through, they just fold their tent because it is too hard and follow and promote fake. I had a Kung Fu Grand Master and it took 3 years before he would call you by your name.

Baul is like that, you are not automatically in, anybody who is a Baul who automatically makes friends with you is not a Baul, there is a procedure of initiation by seeing how easy you are bought and sold.

Babu Kishan can tell who you are in a second, what you want, and what is your intention regarding Baul. Yes, he has been fooled by people in the past, especially scholars only because of a hope, a hope to preserve his tradition.

Do not expect Babu Kishan to give you a drop of Baul unless he can see you are sincere and are ready to go the length, he may even mislead you to qualify you. He is wiser and older now, the lessons of almost 60 years are etched on his soul. Lessons of growing up with Nabani Das Baul and Brajabala Dasi the last Bauls of his lineage who lived as Bauls untouched outside desires, of his journey through preserving Baul and all the Guru's and top in India Music Art and Film. Terrorist attacks, surviving the 2004 tsunami, many have no clue who Babu Kishan is and what he has lived, he is not a regular person or a simple Baul he is extraordinary and a genius in Indian music.

He has fundraised for thousands of peoples and causes for decades, so he helps many but when it comes to Baul he spent a lifetime, why should he give you his inner soul. You have show some sincerity from your inner soul.

No Bauls traveled the world or outside of Birbhum until this family (lineage) of Bauls did. All follow them, how they dress, how they dance, and the songs they sing and some even take the names off the people who recorded the songs (Babu Kishan) and the people who wrote the (poetry of the song) and put their own on, they copy the styles right down to watching a youtube of Babu Kishan sing the song a hundred times and give no credit.

I have seen people release a book on Baul, I have read the book, then only a few years later to see the book completely updated even using terms that Babu Kishan created 'the rasa lila mystics'. It just goes on and on, elaborately creating new lineages, the desperation is endless. One would say to me get a life, well this is my life, I am a researcher, reading everything that people have written about Baul and qualifying it.

All will be qualified, everybody including Babu Kishan's own family. This book is taking way longer than expected, now onto its 13th year and quite frankly, I more that anybody want to be done with this subject. What I have learned more than anything is that it is Kali Yuga, and in this time period, 'what is real is seen as unreal and what is unreal is seen as real!

That goes for truth, truth is lost to this world, I am not sure many people do not know what it is to tell the truth and be honest?"

Babu Kishan had written 3 books in the past and was the first Baul to ever write a Book on Baul, his father wrote one with a Vaishnava Scholar using all of Babu Kishan's notes and other book that were left in the Calcutta home without his permission or credit, I read it there are truths, it is a difficult read and through my research i found an post by a Baul Women who claims she is from a lineage, copied and pasted the techniques listed in the book directly, saying that is what she is teaching, un freaking unbelievable, life is stranger than fiction?? All will qualified.

He was the first to put Baul on Youtube, a mass of Bauls many of whom were not even Baul followed, singing folk songs, pieces of Baul songs, saying they were this and that.

I guess I could say, people follow this lineage of Baul, people absolutely follow Babu Kishan but in this circumstance regarding Baul, they follow, copy and make up stories?

Jai Guru, Jupiter the lord of telling the truth and good judgement just moved into Sagittarius rules by Jupiter (the Guru) lets hope some sense regarding a little sect of Vaishnava Tantric Bauls is told and told truthfully by someone who actually knows the truth.

Facts about Lineage Vaishnava Tantric Baul - Family Lineage, always family, the whole concept of Baul is based on family.

The cover photo: above is of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul on an album recorded in 1967 when Allen Ginsberg told the Grossman's to bring Nabani to America, he did not come, he sent his 2 son's and musical troupe, The Bauls of Bengal. This album was recorded at the Big Pink in Woodstock NY, Bob Dylan and The Bands place to jam.

Babu Kishan in the 1980's came to associate with Bob Dylan and had a many decade friendship with Allen Ginsberg, he is the only Baul who knew Ginsberg for a long period of time, yet others keep writing about Ginsberg and the Bauls without knowing this? Babu Kishan performed in 40 or more concerts with Bob Dylan and the Band? He released all Bob Dylans albums in India and Asia. Yet, those who are talking and writing keep making like they had the association. Babu Kishan's youngest brother never ever met Bob Dylan, he lied when he said Bob Dylan came to Calcutta to secretly attend his wedding. Bob Dylan has never been to India. It is easy to talk about outsiders destroying Baul but it comes from the inside too and it comes right from inside Lineage Baul. Baul is extinct, no indigenous peoples of planet earth can survive their old way of life.

Baul has been passed down for thousands of years through 'family' lineages. A Guru Shishya Paramapara Sampradaya. It is easy today to make up what Baul is and create new lineages that never existed, sad but true and then fundraising in the name of Baul, telling people Baul is not from a family but initiation only? Shockingly easy and this is watering down and reducing what Baul is, what you do not even have authority to do but do because Baul is extinct and you think you can charm, dress exotic and perhaps you too can be a Baba or Maaa???

Not only watering down and reducing, it is a cultural appropriation a cultural degradation, speaking about what Baul is when you make it up and change what Baul is based on your own selfish desires without respect for the ancients.

Most of these people speaking now for Baul are not born into any Lineage or are not related to lineage Baul. Baul became a way for many outsiders to make a living as they can not find another way, they learned if they can be a Baul, at least they can survive. This is the way with all indigenous peoples who struggle to adapt to the modern world.

Baul became extinct decades ago, cigarette sellers and low caste have become Baul, however, Baul was a high philosophical thought that is not reachable by ordinary person. They are riding on the coat tails of this lineage, singing their songs, but only portions there do not know the teachings and make it up as they go. Making up stories, following this lineage around the world. Baul adopted people into their families and initiate them into Baul as part of their family. The Western people do not know and they think, oh wow how cool, how exotic, and even the Bauls that were born in Baul families can not survive, as I said Baul is extinct and I will say it again Babu Kishan has spent his whole life preserving Baul as he could see the writing on the wall.

Bauls meet  in Akara's and learn, it takes at least 12 years of living with a Baul family to become a Baul and today or for the past at least 3 decades that does not constitute what makes a Baul because Baul is extinct.

I read recently a paper by a young scholar OMG it sounds like she is saying Baul learn only seminal retention in Akara's. What a way to absolutely destroy Baul, misinformation and sensationalized piece of scholarly garbage, of an extinct indigenous peoples? Instead of scholarly work trying to get to the truth of what Baul is of trying to meet someone related, this copy and paste paper after paper needs to qualified by someone because they ruin the lineage of a people that do not exist anymore in the original Baul way of life.

It should be known that authentic Vaishnava Baul of Ekchakra Birbhum the only lineage of Baul are NOT low caste, real Bauls were actually Gosai which a Brahmin lineage but they rejected the Gosai, but you would never know this because you have never met an authentic Baul, you only can make things up and copy and paste what every other writer wrote and it is wrong. Baul is extinct and it has been preserved decades ago by Babu Kishan but then you do not know him or have never talked to him and probably never will after he read what you wrote about Baul? The so called Bauls you are meeting are degrades because of scholars like you, you do not understand what it is to be an indigenous person or anything about preserving authentic Baul.

There are 2 types of Bauls that come from Lineage Baul and the family of Baul, one is Girhi (lives in the home, mother, father, husband wife and children) and Udasi comes from the family but is a sadhu and wanders but still associates with the family. All come and go from a family, there is not Baul without family connection and just saying you are from a lineage does not mean you are, your Guru copied and followed everything Nabani and Purna Das Baul did and he wore a the patch work quilt dress Babu Kishan designed, he sang the songs of this lineage, he danced exactly carbon copy of Nabani and his style of Ekatara Baya and Nupoor but you have a different lineage? No, not true and in historical Baul and when Babu Kishan starts to talk, the truth will be out for all to see.

Nabani Das Khyapa Baul aka Khepa Baul - the Baul who initiated Rabindranath Tagore into Baul and his wife Brajabala Das a pure Vaishnava Baul she would call Nabani - Mahanto.
Baul is not like other Sadhu's or Tantrics who obtain initiation from any Guru although they have more than one Guru in a lifetime, they study everything but that does not mean they become that, they are born Baul.

Bauls stick together in a group or Akara. It is sad today that Baul is extinct. New Baul singers are singers and they sing the song of this lineage, they follow this lineage of Baul Jai Nitai is a common greating, Nitai for their direct ancestor Nityananda a Baul Avadhuta from their village Ektara Birbhum but they have moved on, they are not orthodox and were Sanskritist. New Baul follow the dress, many dressing in the patch work quilt dress that Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das designed back in the late 1970's, this is how you can tell who follows who, if you see Ektara, Baya and Nupoor 100% copied from Nabani, nobody did this but Nabani but now you follow but take his name off and use everything of this lineage and even follow right down to exact places and friends, how is this possible?

Many follow the one and only Nabani Das Khyapa Baul style of Ektara Baya (drum) and nupoor style of bells, this did not come from another lineage. There is no other lineage of Baul. Baul is not Fakir Auls Sai and Dervish that is Fakir not Baul, that was a plant by Babu Kishan to see who would copy it and by Bhaktivinode Thakur who hated the Bauls, he was an orthodox reformer and never met a Baul in his life, like other city folk and scholars they think everybody is a Baul, sorry that is not so.

Babu Kishan in the late 1970's brought some Bangladeshi's to Calcutta to record them, and to record Lalon Fakir songs, he is one of the first to record Lalon Fakir poetry. Babu Kishan is an extreme creative and a Master Composer of all Indian Music, he uses his talents in many experimental ways.

Lalon Fakir was a great poet, he was not a Baul. His poetry is Baul like but he did not follow Baul practices. More will be written about this in his new book to be released. Babu Kishan preserved Baul decades ago and is always shocked what people write about Baul, copy and paste and make it up as you go? Somehow Babu Kishan's recording of Lalon Fakir (Lalon shah) poetry into songs, made people think Lalon was a Baul. He was poet, he did not have a tune to his poetry until Babu Kishan put music to his words. A poet only is not a Baul. There is more and much of what Babu Kishan has to say will be shocking.
Babu Kishan late 1970's front row middle person beside the guy with the dark shirt, the others are all Bangladeshi singers, Purna Das Baul back row.

Not many understand the destruction they are causing, they do not understand, they just use and play act to fundraise for their fake lineages.

A new young scholar is now copy and pasting making huge assumptions and calling Baba Pagla a Baul, Babu Kishan knew him personally over a long period of time, he would stay in their house in Calcutta, he was a poet and a musician. Baba Pagla followed Baul not the other way around, Baul did not follow him, he used to stay in their home in Kolkata and follow them.

Babu recorded Baba Pagla many times, he was not a Baul, he was a Baba and loved Baul. Baba Pagla's students were not Bauls they were something but not Baul. More personal stories to come and people to be qualified openly.

Purna Das Baul made Baba famous because he would say Purna sing my song, sing my song, so he sang many of Baba Pagla's poetry, music composed by Babu Kishan.

Baba Pagla used to hang out with Purna Das Baul and family, he used to babysite Babu Kishan and his brothers. Babu recorded him many times and there are many stories, He was not a Baul but appreciate Baul, he was a Bengali Poet who had his own following.

I will say it again. Baul is extinct, leave them alone and let them preserve their birth right, no outside interference is needed, no speculations, no using their story as your story but taking the names off, no riding on the coat tails of this lineage.

Nabani Das Khyapa Baul is the last authentic Baul who left in 1969, his wife is the last authentic Baul Women who left in the last 1990's. New Baul singers are just that singers and some are yogi's and yogini's but not Bauls, to be a Baul is not an act, it is deep and now extinct. You follow Baul, desire to be but you are NOT, stop duping people and stop making up stories and telling untruths.

Have some respect for an indigenous people, stop making it up as you go! You follow Baul, there is no other lineage and if you don't know, do not make it up, it is endless, the damage is endless.

More to come is the late book Historical Baul from inside the tradition, not by followers but from the Lineage. The book is late but better late than never.

Recently National Geographic apologized, the headlines read, “For Decades, Our Coverage Was Racist. To Rise Above Our Past, We Must Acknowledge It.” And as well intentioned as it is, it is a problem and it hurts indigenous cultures that are marginalized and Baul is, even if it looks like some are rich, they are trying to survive in this world. Leave them alone.

The only Baul poetry written by Allen Ginsberg, Ginsberg wrote this for Babu Kishan. Ginsberg wrote a song title Lalon, however, the song has nothing to do with Lalon and the speculation and linkage that is made by people who did not even know Allen Ginsberg is crazy.

Babu Kishan a poet visited Allen Ginsberg at least once a year in his home in NY that is a book unto itself, yet when writers write about Allen Ginsberg's only association with Baul, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Babu Kishan not a word? Just using Babu Kishan's stories and taking his name off and speculations. This has gone on for decades.

“Baul of Bengal, I sing for all,  Blue Danube is my Jamuna,  Hudson my Vrindavan,  see me in Calcutta, Toronto and London,  Hear my call Baul of Bengal,  Same man many names,  same player,  many games,  Love is magic to win at life,  Hear my call O Baul of Bengal.”

Written by Allen Ginsberg (1983) for Babu Kishan

The only Lineage Baul, all Bauls follow Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, his style Ektara, Baya and Nupoor! This picture of Nabani, originally taken by Rabindranath Tagore has been used as the symbol of Baul since the 1920's.

Tantric Vaishnava Baul were Oral Sanskrit, Baul singing in Vernacular Birbhum Bengali, Kirtan in Sanskrit/Bengali.

“The problem is that the translations (of the Upanishads) do not render the beauty of the original text, because these masterpieces have been misunderstood by foreign translators, who only strive to bring out the intellectual meaning without grasping the soul contents of it and do not perceive the ecstasy of the seer ‘seeing’ his experiences”  by Sri Aurobindo

Babu Kishan has often said to me, most Indian people including himself, do not go to western kirtans because they do not have a clue what they are chanting, he is nice about it saying, at least they are trying.

Babu Kishan akak Krishnendu Das grew up on the soil and in the soul of Birbhum India, where he was raised listening, hearing and remembering Sanskrit. Sri Nabani Das Khyapa Baul his Grandfather and Brajabala Dasi Grandmother were the last of the authentic Vaishnava Baul. They spoke Oral Sanskrit and read Sanskrit manuscripts. Yes Vaishnava Bauls were oral Sanskritist and they sang in vernacular Bengali to the villagers who were not Sanskritists.

Babu was lucky to have started his life hearing and remembering, this he continued along with the learning of classical Sanskrit first for 12 years at the Ramakrishna Mission, Calcutta University and through great teachers/friends such as 'Dr. Roma Choudhry' the first Indian female to attend and obtain a degree from Oxford University a well know Sanskrit Drama writer.

"It is the soul of the words that are missing, it is the soul or the practice that is missing. The practice of Yoga, Tantra, Bhakti Yoga is there, it is a sing song, singing is good, exercise is good, techniques are good by without the SOUL, the essence it is just that another earthy thing to do. There should be so much Soul in these Indian practices that you can not be of the real world. "

Lone Shaman goes rolling along, Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul

Saturday, August 30, 2008
The Times of India
By Debdutta Ray

Krishnendu Das aka Babukishan Baul, the son of Baul samrat, Purna Das Baul and grandson of legendary Nabani Das Baul was here, in our city for a poetry book launch. While he keeps his audience in his thrall with his powerhouse rendition of Baul earthy singing and dancing, the foot can't help but tap; synchronising with every pluck of the 'Ektara' string; the mind can't help but drift away into the rustic village interiors.

At a tender age of four, a realisation came to Krishnendu that he is going to become a Baul like his father and grandfather and keep the centuries old family tradition alive. He even started touring the country and gradually began to touch foreign shores with his father, for his musical repertoires. Says Babukishan Baul," We are the messengers of peace.

We wander from place to place spreading the message of divine love and universal brotherhood. We worship the soul. Every soul is beautiful as God lies in every individual." Even though it seems like it is entrenched in Hindu tradition, the Baul philosophy transcends all religions. It believes in free-thinking.
"We borrow ideas and ideologies from, Buddhism, Christianity and several other ancient religions.

Several eminent authors and stalwarts like Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore himself, rock musicians, poets and artists have drawn inspiration from Baul music and philosophies. Babu's professional career in music began with some of the 20th century's greatest musicians.
He toured with Bob Dylan's The Band in their 1985 East and West tour. He has performed and recorded with the likes of George Harrison, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Chakka Khan, Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Tom Petty, Miles Davis, Allan Fakir, Herbie Mann, Third World, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Ziggy Marley, R D Burman, and many others.
The Beat poet Alen Ginsberg had exclaimed after listening to Baul music, "I have finally found what I was looking for!" And where does a Baul draw his inspiration from? "We look within. We search our souls and find the answers. The deepest and the most profound secrets are lying in our hearts, which can be unearthed only by means of meditation and staying in touch with our core," says Babukishan.
The Baul's ideology is symbolised as the 'Ektara' - the one stringed instrument, connotes "to unite'. As the line goes "…deshey deshey more ghor acchey…" (I have a home in every land), a Baul wears a multicoloured attire, called 'Guduri', made up of cloth swatches stitched together, picked up from every place, every land he visits, representing the multicoloured nature of human society with all its shades. I designed this patch work dress and my family and I are the first to take Baul outside of Bengal and India.

All Baul follow our lineage, they dress as us, sing our songs and follow Nabani Das Khyapa Baul who is the first Baul to play the Ektara, Baya and wear a certain style of Nupur around his ankles. Our lineage is the only Das Baul and Dasi lineage of Vaishnava Baul.
The maverick musician, Babukishan knows how to play about 15 different instruments and can even make many with his own hands. He was the first to make Baul Fusion music collaborating with international acts like Beach Boys, Bob Dylan and The Band, Ziggy Marley in the late seventies and eighties. . However, he was subjected to a lot of criticisms from the purists.
Says Babu, many fakes have come out. But a true Baul is the one who can tell a profound philosophy in the first few lines of his/her song, then breaks into crooning the lines of the poet Rashoraj Goshai, " Amar jemon beni temni robey, chul bhejabo na' ( I shall dip into the water, yet not let my braid get wet in it), which means, I shall be a part of the world and enjoy every bit of pleasure it can give, yet be detached from it. Most women have been 'Grihi' (one who stays indoors) Baul, like his grandmother, Brojobala Dashi, has also contributed to this kind of music and their support has been monumental in Baul music.
Besides, women are considered to be the source of inspiration and strength. Says Babukishan, "We believe that every human being has aspects of man and woman inside him or her. That's why we keep long hair." With the opening up of the economy and globalisation, Baul music has received acceptance abroad, but not as much in India, although our nation is getting westernized at jet-speed.
Says Babukishan who gives lectures at several universities in the USA, Canada, Europe, South East Asia, etc, "The latest culture to hit the youth is the 'mall culture'. They are seeing fifty thousand things around them, but cannot set their hearts upon what they want." The legendary Bob Dylan had once said to him "India is becoming Bob Dylan and Bob Dylan is becoming Baul." So what is freedom to a Baul? "Freedom to me is boundless, it means to be able to do whatever I want, go wherever I want to go, say whatever I want to say.
I will feel free and liberated when I find my 'moner manush' my soul mate. Till that time, I will keep on searching it." Babukishan wants to start an institution called, The Bauls of Bengal Academy of Folk Performing Arts, to help preserve this ancient lineage. "We are looking for a platform and finances. The institute will be devoted to the pursuit of learning Baul music, Vedic healing and Music Therapy," says the Baul, who has immense faith in power of mass media.
Only it can change the way the world thinks, as Baul has been the oldest medium, wandering from place to place, telling stories, exchanging philosophies and ideas. Baul origin: The word Baul (pronounced: baa-ul) derived from the Sanskrit word 'vyatul' meaning 'insanity'.
Bauls of Bengal can be traced back to the 16th century to the advent of Vaishnava spriritual leader Chaitanya Deva (1486-1533) and his great teacher/friend Sri Nityananda of Ekachakra.
The mystic Bengal Baul sect constitutes, performing Kirtan, Bhajan and Baul songs. They were minstrels who wandered the streets of Birbhum (famous for Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's education institution, Shantiniketan), sleeping under trees and singing and dancing for a livelihood.
The Bauls have their own philosophy, a mix of Hindu, Buddhist and Tantra. Like the Sufis, they strive to bridge the rift that was created between the religious and social groups, professing freedom from compulsion, doctrine and social caste.

Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and his friend Poet (Kabi) Nuzul Islam

This a very valuable picture at  #Kolkata’s  #PGHospital

I still remember from our family I am the one ☝️ who took my grandmother Brajabala Dasi to the hospital,  to see one last time #PoetNazrulIslam whom my Grandmother and Grandfather Guru Nabani Das Khyapa Baul were close friends.

In 1974 I remember, he was a well was one of the well wishers of my #GrandFather, I brought him once to my Grandfather’s Death anniversary Baul mela, which I arranged every year. Nazul Islam wrote ‘Ami Bhai KhyapaBaul Amaar Deul’ about my Grandfather Boro Baba aka Naboni Das Khepa Baul.

My father Purna Das Baul recorded "‘Ami Bhai Khyapa Baul Amaar  Deul’ at 'Hindustan Records' in the early 1970’s with my Grandfather’s composition and tune.

Please watch the video by clicking on the Youtube link, "watch on Youtube". You will find hundreds of others singing this poetry now, still using Nabani Das Khyapa Bauls, tune. My father Purna Das Baul was the first person to sing it after Nabani and it was made famous by Purna Das Baul.

RabindranathTagore wrote ‘Aamr e Paraye Paraye Khepiye Baraye Kon Khyapa se’ about Nabani Das Khyapa Baul whom he named. 'Mirror of the Sky’ and ‘Khepa Baul'.

My GrandFather initiated Tagore into Baul and named him #RobiBal (Ravi Baul) he gave Tagore a dress which so popular those days, even RabindranathTagore restarted #Shantiniketanpoetpesivals to todays #PousMela in honour of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul.

It is funny to me that everyone is now taking the title “Khyapa (Khyepa) Baul and Khyapa Baba” to be in the market place, I have noticed many calling themselves #pioneer  #Legend #Saint  #Khyapa today which does not make any sense, it is shameless? Das Baul and Dasi is our lineage.

There is only one West Bengal Baul #pioneer #legend #khyapa that was my Grandfather #BaulSaintNabanDasKhyapaBaul.

I was listening and watching someone sent me question from Europe, "BabuDa what is your comment about today’s Bauls?

I said no comments why because there is nothing to comment, it is actually an insult, for this I gave my life to preserve the original Bauls, it is all acting? OMG, I guess they are trying,  at least they trying to be a Baul Singer if and becoming a #TouristAttractions but Baul NO.

Acting like they something to become Baul is not a easy job dear? No there is no  #BaulSadhna or #BaulSadhak nor #Sadhika.. or public can not handle with real Baul!

Even today’s Baul Singers are not even close, a 10,000 miles far from my Father and my tunes / compositions which everyone follows still and maybe lifetime forever. They do not even know whose songs they are singing, who they are following, many are taking the songs of my ancestors and creating new lineages, they follow our dress, our songs and the way Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was with the Ektara, Drum and bells (nupoor) his feet, they follow how this lineage dances but yet make up stories.

I am the one who made Baul internationally famous through #Universities #Festivals #TopMusicLebels #Cinema, #Media and it was hard works Dear, at least say the truth rather than pretending you are the one who did all the work, you follow and copy everything I have done, everywhere I have gone.

I made so easier for anyone and I made a concrete platform for next generation and for today’s Baul singers, however, they are completely misusing, that I never thought?

#RabindranathTagore helped little bit from his books and he was initiated into Baul by my Grandfather Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, he was closest to Tagore and when taking about Tagore and Baul is you leave out Nabani Das Khyapa Bauls name, you are misappropriating Baul and making stories. I did all the leg work and the rest by my parents!

I know I said I would not comment but about today’s Baul: It’s too embarrassing how people calling themselves Baul and how everybody is seeing the #Fake, it is acting, it is #tourism, a lot of it is just plain stupidity!! What #BengalGovernment and #IndaGovernment r doing ? And who those people cannt even protect their own #Culture.

Only way before #RabindranathTagore gave the most valuable title #KhyapaBaul to my Grandfather, another thing RabindranathTagore just heard about #LalonFakir’s poetry from his brother but met fist Baul alive and became friendly that was my Grandfather #Birbhumpride #Bengalpride #NabaniDasBaul. Tagore tried to give Nabani whatever he wanted, he tried to keep him with him at all times but you can not capture a real Baul, a real Baul will disappear like the wind. Baul is a wind catcher, you can not catch the wind. Baul is a combination of 2 Sanskrit words “Bayu (Vayu) and Tula” = Baul = to balance the vital airs.

This picture is valuable to me because #BongoBandhu came to visit and see the last time the Poet, in that gathering he without saying anything, sat on floor and almost cried, like a little child, and told Poet one of his Guru ... never seen so reality .. now everything fake for life I mean life is a fake.

People love/ like all fake, and are blind, they can not even see the real original and reality, it is so bad timing for humanity, when they can not real from fake.

Anything with #Baul like the word #International #World #Global #mystic are all due to me , I am the one did all first, and I never ever thought I would have to say this, it is not bragging, it is because the real history is being mis-appropriated by unfeeling, greedy people who are all about internet marking and changing the history of Baul.

Babu Kishan and Nabani Das 'Khyapa Baul his Guru Grandfather' and 'Father' ! Truth Talk!

Although I am so lucky and blessed by #grace of #God#Goddesses !!
Still remember my Musical ability started more in various way from 1973 onward!!
I am so lucky to have grown up on my famous #BaulSaintNabaniDasKhyapaBaul ‘s Lap he totally gave all his #Shakti and #mysticism to me.
I am alive in cosmic way with different #Ayurvedic treatment by Nabani, he took me to almost every temple where I have darshan with all the Great Siddha’s, Saints, Yogi as we wandered with a big hope for my life. Credit goes to my sweet Grandmother, that little baby left to die at birth, was born Mystic with universal vast knowledges more than anyone of my lineage and worked out found out A to Z of life and cosmic power. I do not often share my life story but this is part of it.
I am only from oldest #Baullineage and being the first Grandchild and oldest of my generation. I have brought Baul to the outside world and Indian Music with the record companies in Bombay. I am one of the first to categorize all of Indian Music for the biggest Music companies. Various music, variety of #modern #writeup#poetry #songs#stories, knowledge of #technology
I was born before my parents marriage #lovechild, premature with crooked limbs I was taken to #SuriOldHospital’s where the Doctor told them, this baby would only live for couple days. I was not supposed to live, so they left me to die. Now that I have 2 of my own children I can not imagine leaving a tiny baby, they left me to die just like a street dog, they continued their behaviour as long as I have known them, if they could use me for themselves they did but certainly my parents never did anything for me.

We are all born with different karma's I was born into my Guru's lap and spent 8 years with him he gave me everything as did my Grandmother, my parents are a different story as much as I loved them I can not say it was returned and that is just the way it goes. It is their loss for leaving twice in my life because when they got me at 8 years of age they put me in an orphanage.
Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and his eldest Grandson, in 1964 approximately, he named Babu Kishan - Krishnendu and called him Prem. Babu Kishan was always with Nabani on his lap or close by 24/7, joined at the hip with the Guru.
I was left at birth to this day not sure exactly why? Was it because I was born premature and with crooked limbs or was it because I was born before my parents were married? They left me with my Maha Siddha Grandpa “Nabani Das Khyapa Baul' and Grandma “Brajabala Dasi' a true authentic Vaishnava Baul. Nabani and Brajabala used Ayurvedic healing to straighten my limbs and keep me alive, thank God for them and Nabani being a great alchemist healer of Rasa gave me life, taking me to Ma Tara at Tarapith regularly, I owe Tara Ma and Kali Ma my life we have been very close since my birth in Birbhum. My life was cut out for me at birth, an inborn Tantric and a Music Composer, and of course many other things including Film.
I was returned to Purna and Manju when Nabani passed in 1969 because Brajabala wanted me to with Purna and Manju who already had 2 other sons, and to get an education outside of the village. When I arrived in Calcutta they put in an orphanage, far from Calcutta?

Whatever I am now I did all by myself alone, I never took nor received any help from Purna Das Baul my parents, I made myself strong in every way so as to never even use them for anything. However, they used me emotionally, financially, musically, my whole life, which is my fault to have allowed, especially because there was no respect and where there is no respect there can be no love.

I composed all the music, produced the music and marketed all this Music for my Dad, in the albums below and many songs were my own poetry. I never received anything in return, not a rupee, no royalties, not eve a thank you, not that I was looking for that but as I get older I think and think, they did not even give any respect to me, and actually worked against me. This is not love.

Now with a fresh mind and through time I can see, my parents abused me, even though I am the one who made them famous with my life work, all the music I composed, arranged, promoted, all my time and devotion taking them around the world before there was internet and the modern technology of today. My life devoted to them, all my money and talent given to them, other arrangement management organized with strong ability always make you a complete and strong platform. Which I did without any of my benefit to myself and now I see in someway I made my life complicated and allowed so much of my own suffering. I should have stood up long ago, I should not have ignored all the nasty things you said behind my back. I would bring a Bollywood star to your home and after leaving they would always say, who is your family, they do not have anything nice to say about you, they said this and that, only to get angry at the person who told me the truth. I am sorry.

I was born a Mystical Music Composer with the ability to organize, arrange, manage, academic in so many different ways from music to programs, I am the person who gave Baul’s a platform to stand on, a template and many have followed in my footsteps around the World and with Baul and Baul fusion Music. Now looking back on it it, I born with special mind, a Tantric mind inherited from my Grandpa who was a genius who all genius people like to be around, he was the Baul who initiated Rabindranath Tagore into Baul, all poets, artists, musicians and even political leaders like Nehru wanted to be associated with, most of Nabani’s history has gone to the way side because he never wanted to be known but his son my father Purna Das Baul had the desire to be seen and known by all. I was the only one who talked and kept my Grandfathers memory alive, holding a Baul Mela in Calcutta every year to honour him with my energy, my money, my time.
What today the Baul artist are experiencing is due to my hard work, I made what is tough much easier.
Once I was alone and with the sky full of stars, it was summer holidays Durga Puja time and all the children at the Ramakrishna Misson had gone home, however, nobody came to pick me up to take me home 🏠, I was only 8 years old and still adjusting to the fact that I was essentially an orphan in a different place now. One midnight I woke up with a magical lights everywhere, even thought there was nobody there. I kept hearing the sound like 'I am with everyone’ I felt my Grandpa always my ideal my first Guru, my inner lights to esoteric goal. I am born Mystic as I felt day by day trying to understand why I was so different from other people. I never said anything to any one, I have kept all my magical mystical experiences to myself. A friend once told the baby cry’s most get milk, anyhow I never cried but got everything travel more than 💯 Countries and so many connections without anyone’s support except my Guru.

After moving to Bombay, the first Daughter gonna be born, I didn’t have a rupee in my pocket but doctor gave full of list with so many medications, magically I got call from #UshaMangeshkar #PankajUdgas #RVPandit for wonderful wishes, I was so absent minded couldn’t say anything only Ha Hu but never told anyone I needed money, I didn’t know what gonna I was going to do?
I took a bus sat just front seat bus 🚌 back n forth from King Circle to Tardeo area . I looked and saw wonderful lights going one step before and stopped Worli. I got down at #Hajiali and keep walking following that like ended up to #HajiAliBaba, spend some time and back to home next morning have to go to hospital, got a call from a #Parsilady who was working for #BombayCancerSociety, I met months ago and we supposed to make an unique #Audiobook but somehow didn’t happened she needed permission from other board member. she told time to star if u need some money advance come to meet me morning, got 40’000 cash 💰 without saying anything and 60’000 later.
My first Daughter born with 40,000 cash like a #miracle a mystical desire of need at that time. I still talk with my Grandpa Guru to this day, he left the planet in 1969 and is forever, with me. When I first came to Bombay another mystical happened to me and the hotel we stayed in #Dadar east, my parents were visiting with two other guys present. I had arranged a singing program for my parents but it was to be in 3 day. I went to front desk and asked if we can go on a city tour. When I was talking to this Maharastrian guy, I became absent mind and again my Grandpa around me and took my mind to a photo. I was little surprised to see the photo with full of energy and smiling at me and suddenly I asked the boy who that photo about? SaiBaba Shirdi Ke SaiBaba, from that day on I always found my Grandpa in SaiBaba.

From that day my life made much easier through #ShirdiSaiBaba. I am alive due to my Grandparents and all their hard work and their mystical connection to me, they are my Guru's, which I felt the day my Grandfather died like a electrical came to my body still can not even think he is no more, he always with me with his mystical smile, he game my name #Prem and named me Krishnendu which is my legal name!
Suri Doctor #Kaligoti used to call me #Babu and called my Grandpa #BabaNabani you and your Prem feel like the real honey connection. Kaligoti doctor also supported me a lot through Ayurvedic Healing, he was a close friend of my Grandfather and they were all into Ayurvedic herbs and alchemy and compared notes, much of this has been passed onto me!
Anyhow my parents were so busy for their own life and my grandparents gave me all their focus, it was a time when Nabani had quite his wandering traveling ways and was staying with me all the time. Kaligoti had told Nabani that I was not a regular baby, something was different from the other babies, my Grandpa answered, obviously he is my #Madhu my Love my Prem has to be extraordinary and I have always been so different, my mind is completely different from from regular people and any of the children born in my #Baulfamily.

A story below just one example of Babu Kishan's Calcutta family, and how they used and brain washed him, I call it emotional blackmail.  Early 1980's, it was difficult for Babu Kishan because he never really felt he belonged and never quit fit in but he did everything to please them and gave everything he gave all to them, including credit for his work?? These have been huge lessons in Babu Kishan's life. His Grandmother always taught him, let it go, leave it, just let it be?

Babu Kishan as Krishnendu Das was the Music Director, Composer, Principle Music, Background Music and Film Design of this movie,  he won the Best Music in Russian Film Festival and Best Music Indian National Award and Best Film 1981 the film was released in 1983.

Long story, long story behind this film and the truth will be told.

Purna Das Baul was NOT the music director, it is all about family emotional Blackmail, Babu put his fathers name there because this is what his Mom wanted, hard to believe but Babu would do whatever his parents wanted. Purna Das Baul is not a Music Composer or Music Director, he is only a singer and had to be taught to sing in Hindi because he did not speak Hindi, he has never ever composed any music (period).

Babu Kishan name listed as Krishnendu Das is listed on the original movie and music. It was later mysterious changed to his father Purna Das Baul and his Mom said, no leave it.
