Hrid Majahare Rakhbo: The Song's Profound Meaning
This lineage, the only lineage of Baul, is the Path of Radha.
This is a Nabani Das Khyappa Baul song, sung by his grandson Babu Kishan in a combination of his father Purna Das Baul's style and his grandfather Nabani Das Baul's. Purna Das Baul first recorded this in the 1960s with Hindustan Records. It has already been recorded and preserved by this family of Baul long ago.
Hrid Majahare Rakhbo is the poetry of Baul Saint Avadhuta Sri Nabani Das Khyapa Baul.
What Nabani Das is saying about this song:
The song expresses the silent love, the deepest intimacy of love expression, that takes place silently between beloved Krishna and Radha. This profound, deep love flows back and forth between them. They do not want to lose eye contact.
"I will keep you in my heart always and never let you go, because if the golden person of my life, Krishna, goes, I will never, ever get this person again; there is only one, there is no other for me. Krishna is my other half."
Krishna is invisible, love is invisible. Everyday you have to say "I love you, I love you, I love you"—that is the mantra. Love is like that: out of sight, out of mind. You must constantly remember your beloved.
Radha always keeps the sacred place of Braja in her heart, where the pastimes of Krishna and Radha take place—the memories of her play with her love, Krishna. When Krishna and Radha are out of sight of each other, there is a strong feeling of separation, of deep loss, so they never want to be out of sight. They want to gaze into each other's eyes every moment.
They are constantly pulling each other, constantly focused on each other: Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart, Mind to Mind, always remembering their deep Love.
Nabani is saying, "I want to go to Braja and take the dust of Braja, spread it all over my body, let it seep into my soul. I want to keep them in my heart, on my body forever, and never forget... so I can feel Radha and Krishna, and their intimacy lila. I want to become Radha/Krishna in every pore of my being. I only want to be in a deep bhava, crazy for Radha, God intoxicated for Radha, mad in Radha's name, in oneness with Radha and Krishna."
Vaishnava Baul brings the male and female into one body. Radha and Krishna live in their hearts. They view Radha as superior because she has the power to pull Krishna. You will find that a Baul never shaves their heads; the reason for this is that Krishna has hair. And remember, half of them is feminine, so they like to wear earrings too. They want to emulate Radha. This is their Lila.
When Krishna smiles, all the birds fly, deers play, flowers sing, everything becomes alive in Beauty. Colors become brighter. It is Radha who makes Krishna smile; she made him beautiful. All the Gopis became alive, everybody woke up, everything was God intoxicated, alive, happy, vivid, bright, awake, ecstatic. This is exactly how a Baul should make you feel. A Baul activates Shakti. Baul is the path of Radha.
When Radha and Krishna have eye contact—"which they do not do in Indian culture with anybody; you only have eye contact with your beloved; only your beloved can look into your soul"—they would feel, "I want to be in eye contact, and I will gaze and go inside, feel love... soulmate love." The love is in the eyes, the gaze of deep soul love.
"How many millions of years I have been traveling, one life to one, just to get this human body so I can feel Radha and Krishna in my soul. If I sing beautiful Krishna, the king of the flute, will be kind to me and come to me, and then I will never let go." Radha says Krishna is Peace; Krishna says Radha is peace; they are soulmates.
Babu notes that he feels Western culture will not understand the depth of this song. There are no words to fully translate this old Bengali; it takes days of talks to understand. Babu Kishan thinks Western culture will not grasp the depth. I will try to get more later and attempt a better interpretation, but it is truly hard because these songs are just seeds of higher philosophy.
Song Recording and Endorsement
Babu Kishan recorded this song in Woodstock, New York, at Albert B. Grossman's Bearsville Studio, where Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix also recorded. His father recorded there back in 1967 during Woodstock. Babu recorded in 2004 with Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Al Aronowitz, Patti Smith, and Robert Thurman, with Dave Matthews also present. They danced and danced while Babu was recording. Thanks to his long-time friend Sally Grossman, the session was memorable. Dave Matthews said he had never heard anything like it, and Babu did not have a clue who Dave Matthews was! Babu said it was lots of fun to make them dance, as they all really enjoyed it.
Now there are literally hundreds of people all over India singing this song without any idea where the song originates. This song has been probably one of the most re-recorded Baul songs, without the re-recording pretendian fake Baul ever giving credit.
Purna Das Baul was singing all Baul songs on the radio and back in those days, when pretendian Baul a generation of the flow of refugees from the war between East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India arrived in Calcutta in 1971millions of refugee's. This is where the 'fake it til you make it' Bauls originated from, they heard the songs on the radio and decided perhaps they too could be the famed singer Purna Das Baul. This was common.
Today it is a different story, this lineage is now extinct, there is a new bread of fake non-indigenous Bauls who self-title and make up Baul Gurus and lineages so that they can take the opportunities of the template KD Babu Kishan created for the indigenous Bauls to survive this new, armed with the a watered down version of the intellectual indigenous property of this lineage or one and only parampara these fake nakal Bauls, "Pretendian Bauls" "inauthentic practitioners" or "opportunistic claimants": self-titled themselves "Das Baul" and "Dasi, a mis-appropriation and faking Baul for financial benefit or trying to be a Guru Baba or Ma? and catch some of the lucrative business.
Today, this is indigneous fraud, as the world changes and their are indigenous rights and since this earlier time the indigenous people of Baul who did all the work pioneering Baul have been educated in what is indigenous fraud and indigenous identity theft it is no longer acceptable and since the United Nations has recognized that indigenous people have the right of self-determination. It is no longer Ok to copy, and steal the intellectual property of an indigenous Hindu sect, namely The Vaishnava Sahajiya Tnatric Bauls of Birbhum W Bengal India.
This Baul Kirtan song has been appropriated by many outsiders too, without ever giving credit to the poet, many of the kirtans because Vaishnava Baul is the root of Kirtan in Bengal have been appropriated by the orthodox Vaishnava reformers and the New Age Vaishnava who went to the West.
The orthodox Vaishnava hate the Bauls, and call the Bauls names. but freely copy everything of the Vaishnava Baul including their ancestor Nityananda 'Nitai' (Gosia Chand) a Baul Avadhuta who taught Sri Chanitanya the Baul indigenous method of enertering the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as a wake up to announce to the villagers, we are here, we are here to teach and sing and dance.
Many of the Baul indigenous kirtans were taught to Sri Chaitanaya who was a Baul and not a Sahajiya Vaishnava he never used these techniques or tantra, because he was only a Vaishnava Intellectual who learned these techniques from his older Guru Sri Nityananda from Ekachakra Birbhum W Bengal India.

No poaching, taking names off, no making Baul random, Bauls always knew who the poets are to say they don't care is cultural appropriation and adharma. Baul has been preserved by Babu Kishan since the 1960's, if anybody asks for donations to preserve Baul they are a cheat, if they say they are from a different lineage, they are lying. If they sing the songs of this lineage and write other poets name off or do not tell who the poet is they are adharmic and trying to collect people to be a Baba or Maa. #fakefame
