I send my greetings in the spirit of the Baul tradition.

The path you now follow was paved by giants. Before offering criticism, we must first salute the pioneers who dedicated their lives to establishing the Baul tradition on a global stage.

Honoring the Foundation and Roots of Baul

The Baul tradition's most authentic and oldest living lineage originates in Birbhum, W Bengal India. This foundation was concretized by a specific singular Parampara or ancestral lineage that successfully brought Baul music and philosophy to the worldwide consciousness:

Baul Pioneer Nabani Das Khyapa Baul (The Baul Sant cherished by Rabindranath Tagore and the last Baul Avadhuta to walk on earth). He was the only Baul Avadhuta in the past generations that was a true tantric Baul and was known at Tarapith, initiated by Bhama Kepa himself and others, no one can be Nabani Das Khyapa Baul or use his life as a marketing campaign for opportunistic inauthentic practitioners regarding Baul.
Baul Samrat Purna Das Baul, a Padma Shri recipient from President Pranab Mukherjee in 2012. Purna Das Baul expanded the legacy of this singular one and only parampara of Baul globally since the 1950's as can be seen on Bob Dylan's album John Westly Harding 1967. Purna Das Baul is the first Indian vocalist to spread Indian cultural singing outside of India as an authentic award winning last famous Baul singer with many President of India Awards. He is the son of one and only BAUL GURU Nabani Das Baul, of course he is an authentic Baul and not to be disrespected by calling him a shilpi Baul? He is the 1st and last authentic ‘Baul singer’ in history of all of his firsts and last regarding Baul belonging to him, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and KD Babu Kishan. You can't replace them by following their lives, remaking where they went, who they associated with while dressing as them, singing their songs while deleting their names and telling their stories as if it belongs to you.
Krishnendu Das Baul (Babu Kishan) for the past 60 years I have led Baul preservation efforts of this lineage, research and recording all of lineages Baul songs & Baul Kirtans of this one and only parampara of Baul, as an indigenous ancestral Baul from the inside of at least 13 generations documented. My Baul Guru is my Grandfather (Boro Baba“Nabani Das Khyapa Baul’ from birth. Nabani Das Khyapa Baul aka Khyapa Baba and Khyapa Baul.

“When people steal from our culture they end up distorting our culture, they turn it into something we do not even recognize, erasing us by replacing us.”

Our family is directly responsible for creating the concrete platform upon which every contemporary Baul opportunistic practitioner now stands. Before our efforts, Baul was largely unknown outside of specific regional pockets in West Bengal and later throughout India when Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was a state of Bengal singer opening to gather people all over India for Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister of India in 1947.

Nabani Das Khyapa Baul sang Baul songs/Baul Kirtans at the inauguration of this new India in 1947 for Nehru, and is the first Baul ever to sing on stages with his unique style of Ektara (Gopi Yantra) Baya at this waist and his own style of Nupoor ankle bells encased in metal. Sri Nityananda (Nitai) was a Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Baul Avadhuta (Gosia Candra) of Ekachakra, Bribhum W Bengal; are our ancestors part of our lineage (parampara). My ancestors including Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Baul Samrat (Padma Shri) Purna Das Baul were born in Ekachakra Birbhum W Bengal India this is where our ancestors, and Baul explicitly called the Vaishnava Sahajiya Bauls of Birbhum W Bengal originate.

Today, anyone identifying as a Baul artist, singing Baul songs, or discussing its philosophy owes a debt of gratitude to our family's tireless work over 13 generations documented and hundreds or thousands of years undocumented.

On Authenticity and Respect

While many today choose to perform or act as Bauls, it is crucial to understand the distinction between a Baul Singer and a Real Baul.

Real Bauls maintain a distinct and sacred separation. They do not seek public acclaim or mix with what they perceive as false or commercial representations. Their path is one of divine devotion, not public spectacle.
Contemporary Performers are fundamentally Baul Singers who have initiation into authentic Baul practices, some are even actors, there is no such thing as a Baul master or Baul artist, this was made up by inauthentic opportunistic people who try every which way they can to use our legacy by making up fake Baul Gurus and fake lineages. If you choose this path, you must be humble, grateful, and respectful of the true pioneers who made your visibility possible. We are the only Guru shisya parampara sampradya of Baul.

In the past, the philosophy of Baul was often exploited by academics and certain opposition groups solely for personal or commercial benefit. Today, while we see a vast number of performers—some using the context primarily for tourist attraction—this surge in visibility only underscores the success of the pioneering work done by this lineage.

We urge the new generation to think logically: Who made the road from obscurity to ease?

Creating new groups and spreading false, fabricated stories about the tradition is a grave disservice to reality. Such actions are the biggest crime against the sacredness of the Baul path.

An Appeal

If you love Baul, just love Baul. Do not start a circus. Baul is a divine being—a spiritual quest—not a public performance venue for ego.

I, KD Babu Kishan, as the eldest grandson of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and eldest son of Padma Shri Baul Samrat Purna Chandra Das Baul, represents the oldest living lineage on Earth. I am committed to leading the preservation of the real Baul essence and created the a strong platform globally, which they are taking easily now, however, they have no idea of hough tough it was for me in those early days with social media, computers, from University to University, festival to festival, cultural conference to conference, stage to stage, temple to temple, recording all the music presented on the radio, TV at Government bodies worldwide, libraries, Baul fusion created by KD Babu Kishan starting in the 1970’s with all of Indian Cinema singers, international Rock Bandsyou name it without us, there is no platform to steal. I and I were the first Indian National and International Cultural Ambassadors of Baul, Bhakti Yoga, Kirtan, Tantra, Indian Philosophy, Indian Music to the world on a huge platform as Cultural representatives and Cultural Ambassadors of Indian culture and Baul.

We were the first Cultural Ambassadors of India worldwide through the ICCR and Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Baul 'inauthentic practitioner' opportunistic claimants, there are no more 'firsts or lasts' regarding Baul.

Baul history is complete, if you at not indigenous to Baul, there is no such thing as a Baul artist, or Baul Master there never was EVER. You can not replace the authentic historical Baul by acting as a Baul. You can not claim anything regarding 'all the first or last regarding Baul as Baul was complete long ago.

All we can do now is preserve Baul by an indigenous Baul who preserved Baul for more than 60 years. No one has done the work that KD Babu Kishan has regarding Baul, now it is easy, what he did to preserve Baul and pioneer Baul throughout India and the world no one can repeat, replace or appropriate by stealing the intellectual property of this one and only parampara.

You can track down all the places that this lineage has gone, compete with their lived history and playing out a indigenous fraud of false narratives, pretend all you want, there is no way that you can fake Baul. Nuances missing, fake stories including the copied and stolen the legacy of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul and KD (Krishnendu Das Baul) aka Babu Kishan the truth will be revealed.

There is a paper I found the other day, saying again Bauls of Bangladesh listing off these songs that are not even Baul songs, firstly one has to know what is a Baul song and what is not. Today, it is anything goes, no one qualifies these papers? That will be our next project after the book is published is qualifying both in 'western exegesis' and in the Indian system of 'Purva Paksha' the Indian philosophical style of Indian exegesis.

Heterogeneity and Baul Spirituality: The Songs of Baul Taskir Ali in Bangladesh - Golam Rabbani

I will do a full critique on it, keep in mind Babu Kishan knew Carol Solomon for decades and taught a series of Master classes on Baul at Washington University for years. He knows the stories and the reasons why the late Carol Solomon decided to write about Baul as Muslim, he signed for her grant for her work, but she changed it, Lalon Fakir (Shah) never said he was a Baul, he did not practice Baul sadhana's he was a great poet but not a Baul.

Babu Kishan knew Edward Dimock and all of the early scholars, there is a whole huge chapter in the soon to be released book, on Historical Baul, the chapter should be a book on its own, I could not even fit in all the stories. They are both listed as references for the above article, this is what people do they patchwork 'copy and pasted' one liners by western scholars as to proof that Baul is Muslim. So many Muslims, Bangladeshis, still trying to convert Baul which is Hindu to Muslim, this has to qualified and canceled for once and for all.

I do know they are fishing for a fundraising jackpot, as this copy and paste of speculations has worked to the millions in the past regarding Baul for fake Muslim Bauls. There is not a such think as a muslim Baul or Baul Fakir, think logically, Vaishnava, Shaivism, Shaktism, Dattartreya, Radha/Krishna have completely different practices, Hindu philosophy and Muslim are like oil and water. Just because the Bauls helped all people in times of famine, war, and times of stress does not mean they became them.

Trying to remake all the firsts and lasts of this one and only Baul parampara or lineage is insidious. It is only done because this singular lineage made Baul famous. There are no more famous Bauls, a fake Baul should not even be considered as a Baul. First what qualifications does a person have to determine who is a Baul and hand out awards to them for representing Baul.

What are your qualifications, who have you debated, no one, it is just your story of self promotion based on exotic looks, or is because they rallied and petitioned you and told you so, look at all our likes, look at where we have been, look at our Baul Guru?

With no proof, just made up stories, while copying ever step this pioneering indigenous Baul lineage had created over hundreds of years, scooped up for self-promotion?

There is no new most famous Baul, that claim is opportunistic, it is bizarre the intellectual property theft that is going on, and that is the main reason for this Historical Baul autobiography.

What history do they have, what songs are they singing, why are they following everything from this lineage, style, instruments, where did it come from a fake Baul Guru?

The lack of adhikara is astounding? This all needs to be debated and qualified accurately, not just because someone spread false narratives?

The first Baul to ever sing on a stage is Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, his style was the Ektara, Baya (drum tied around the waist) and his own style of ankle bells, completely misappropriated (stolen and acted out). Being a liar for the sake of collecting people and donations is lying, there is NOT another Baul lineage Das Baul or Dasi, or Vaishnava Baul aka The Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Bauls of Birbhum W Bengal.

The truth will be told, what are you going to do next manifest a stone out of your mouth. LOL Tara Ma is not easy, omg stop copying this lineages legacy, the legacy of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. Tara Ma does not suffer fools certainly not gamers. There are absolutely NOT 20,000 Bauls in Bengal let alone Birbhum, the lies pile up.

He is still here, he has been quiet, not anymore, the truth will be boldly told and years of intellectual property theft revealed. I could go on and on stealing his past and the past of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Brajabala Dasi, Purna Das Baul, Manju Das, Radharani Dasi, Laxshman Das Baul and the the documented 13 generations and many before of this little sect from Ekachakra Birbhum W Bengal who became popular and probably the most faked sect in all of India, will be revealed openly, boldly, how many likes you have on fb does not matter, Intellectual property theft is the opposite of Baul.

This is important because 'Newcomers to BAUL', are watering down, reducing and dumbing down Baul. The speculation on who the Bauls are is mind boggling. Scholars have never got it right, they only speculate or talk to the wrong people. These statements will be qualified one by one.

Babu Kishan has preserved his one and only'Lineage Baul' because he could fore tell the change Baul was even going through back in the 1970's.

No one in this world would know who the Bauls of Bengal are without all the work of this family, this lineage and Babu Kishan. All Bauls follow this lineage, this lineage is ancient and they do not follow anybody.

The new Baul singers, follow this lineage by singing their songs, by dressing as they dress, by following them around the world and by meeting their friends.
