The Profound Depths of Baul: Beyond Misconceptions and Appropriation
Baul Tantra is Tantra Mantra Gopi Yantra, embodying Shakti Sadhana. It follows the Path of the Baul Avadhuta, embracing Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma, and draws from Agamic texts, along with the historical Mahabharata and Ramayan.
Baul Philosophy encompasses all Indian philosophies, distilled into a profound yet simple system known as Baul Darshana (Baul Philosophy). Before one can truly become a Baul, they undergo rigorous family training. This training involves oral Sanskrit with ancient manuscripts, Birbhum vernacular Bengali, Baul coded language called Sandhya Bhasha, and Braja Bhasha. Only after mastering these foundational elements can one proceed to teach and write Baul poetry, which is distinct from ordinary verse. It is based on allegory, metaphors, riddles, and paradox, making it highly particular to the Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Bauls of Birbhum, West Bengal, India—the very "soul and soil of the land." To sing Baul songs authentically means to be a master of Baul Philosophy.
Baul is not simple; Bauls are not illiterate or degraded. These erroneous statements were fabricated to create an opening for individuals to steal, distort, and exploit the Baul tradition. This constitutes nothing less than indigenous fraud and indigenous identity theft.
It takes lifetimes to truly comprehend Baul Philosophy. It is far more intricate than any academic Ph.D. program, representing a synergistic blend of all aspects of Hinduism, or Sanatan Dharma. The individuals often mistaken for Bauls are, in fact, self-titled "fake pretendian Bauls." They haven't grasped the fundamental principles and lack adeptness in any Indian philosophy, let alone Baul Philosophy, which is akin to a "beyond Ph.D. program" in Indian Philosophy.
Copyright, Preservation, and the Warning Against Intellectual Theft
Copyright, all rights reserved. This warning against poaching is stated loudly and repeatedly due to the insidious looting and intellectual property theft perpetrated against this lineage. Appreciation is vastly different from appropriation.
The names of this genuine lineage have been removed, and false lineages created, based entirely on material copied from our tradition. This has been meticulously documented and can be proven. In this modern era, this lineage of Das Baul and Dasi has experienced many "firsts and lasts," and the Baul tradition, as preserved by them, is complete.
No new "fakes" or "pretendian Bauls" are needed as "pretendian Baul Artists" or "pretendian Baul Masters." There is no such thing. In the context of Baul, there is only a Baul Guru. Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was the last authentic Baul Guru. This lineage is indigenous and ancestral to Birbhum. They spoke Oral Sanskrit, the vernacular Birbhum dialect, Baul Sandhya Bhasha (interwoven with coded Baul allegory, metaphors, riddles, and paradox), and Braja Bhasha.
Babu Kishan has already preserved and completed Baul over more than 60 years.
Copying, reworking, retracing, and repeating this lineage's lived stories, then making false claims or stealing songs directly from Babu Kishan's YouTube channel and misattributing poets, is nothing short of Indigenous Intellectual Theft and Indigenous Fraud.
Unfortunately, this is a very real problem. These individuals then attempt to fundraise for "financial jackpots," falsely claiming there are "20,000 Bauls left in Birbhum." This is a lie. Baul has already been preserved by Babu Kishan, also known as Krishnendu Das Baul, for over 60 years. Often, information exclusively shared by Babu Kishan on the blog is repeated and copied by "YouTube Bauls" and their followers, as if they discovered the truth independently.
This is 100% not your story to tell. Stop stealing the intellectual property of this lineage and lying. The first tenet of Baul is to not lie and to tell the truth. If you are not indigenous to Baul, you are not Baul.
The Uniqueness of Baul Tantra and Philosophy: Challenging Misconceptions
Baul Tantra & Baul Philosophy: Baul Philosophy is the essence of all Indian Philosophies, refined into a potent "juice" known as Baul Philosophy.
The Vaishnava Sahajiya Tantric Bauls of Birbhum are profoundly misunderstood. They represent an indigenous, ancestral, and singular Lineage of Baul from Ekachakra, Birbhum, West Bengal, India. This is the only Das Baul and Dasi lineage, traceable through at least 13 generations and orally from the very beginning of the Mahabharata story.
The Sahaja of this lineage is that of Krishna and Dattatreya; it is not the same as Buddhist Sahaja. Every other "fake pretendian Baul" has propagated the erroneous idea that Baul Sahaja is Buddhist, along with other scattered, incorrect information. Baul Sahaja as Krishna and Dattatreya comes only from this one and only lineage. If it is copied now, it constitutes intellectual indigenous identity theft.
The same applies to the meaning of Baul as "Vayu Tula" (Windcatchers). This understanding originates solely from this lineage. If others are now copying it, they are cheating; they never knew this meaning and never stated it until they read it here. This is a significant issue within the Baul world, and when the book is published, names will be named, and all instances will be addressed. Nabani Das Khyapa Baul is the only Khyapa Baul and was known as Khyapa Baba by the villagers of Birbhum, West Bengal, India.
Baul Tantra is Tantra Mantra Gopi Yantra, and it belongs exclusively to this one and only lineage (Parampara).
The history and "her-story" of Baul were completed decades ago. Baul has already been meticulously preserved by Babu Kishan, also known as Krishnendu Das Baul, over a dedicated 60-year period.
You cannot recreate or claim an already lived and concluded history or "her-stories." This lineage has established undeniable "firsts and lasts" in the Baul tradition:
Manju Das stands as the first and only Baul woman to travel the world and perform on major stages, active from the 1960s to 2010.
Brajabala Dasi and Radharani Dasi are recognized as the last authentic indigenous Baul women to have lived.
Nabani Das Khyapa Baul is identified as the last authentic Baul to have walked the earth, passing in 1969. His unique songs, his distinct style of playing the 'Ektara (Gopi Yantra)' and the 'Baya' (drum tied around his waist), and his characteristic ankle bells called 'Nupoor' have all been stolen and appropriated by numerous "pretendian fake Bauls." This is deemed "stolen" because new "Baul Gurus" and "new lineages" have been falsely fabricated.
This pioneering lineage introduced Baul to its very place of origin, Birbhum, to which it is indigenous. Subsequently, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul became the first Baul ever to sing on a public stage, introducing Baul to all of Bengal and India. He performed as an opening act for Nehru during the Freedom Movement against the British across India and sang at India's inauguration in 1947. Before this, Bauls did not perform on stages.
Following him, Nabani's eldest son, (Padma Shri, Pandit, Baul Samarat) Purna Das Baul, achieved many "firsts" in Baul, including becoming the first famous Baul singer and Indian singer to introduce Baul to all of India and globally. Purna Das Baul received numerous Presidential awards and was the first Baul singer and Indian singer to travel the world, initiating the global introduction of Baul in the 1950s.
Purna Das Baul's eldest son, Babu Kishan, who was raised by Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Brajabala Dasi until age eight, is the Baul who created the modern template for Baul. His contributions include:
Recording all the music of this Baul lineage.
Organizing cultural programs worldwide at major festivals, including regular appearances at The Royal Albert Hall, the British Library, and across Europe, America, Asia, and Australia.
Teaching at universities globally.
Creating Baul fusion music two decades before other "pretendian Bauls" claim to have done so.
Being the first Baul to write books on Baul, with the last such endeavor in 1986 sponsored and promoted by George Harrison of The Beatles.
Being the first and only Baul to have a 40-year career as a Music Composer and Filmmaker at all levels of management in Indian Cinema (Bollywood).
Being the first and only Baul to attend the Ramakrishna Mission as a Monk for 12 years.
The Unacceptable Reality of Indigenous Identity Theft
Baul history and "her-story" are complete. To copy this history, to copy this lineage's songs, their unique style, dress, and to fabricate attempts to retrace their journeys and accomplishments, constitutes intellectual indigenous identity theft.Worse still are those who have manufactured "fake Baul Gurus" and "fake Baul lineages," then gaslight the public in India and worldwide by pretending to be Bauls.
Even more egregious is their attempt to fundraise for "financial jackpots" under the guise of "preserving Baul," when Baul has already been preserved. They have already faked and appropriated the songs from this lineage, along with Nabani's style of dance and dress. This is unequivocal indigenous identity theft of Baul and indigenous fraud.
Such actions significantly water down Baul and reduce the cultural significance of indigenous ancestral Baul to a mere fraction of what it truly is. This practice effectively strips opportunities from an already marginalized, small group of indigenous people. The creation of these false narratives has resulted in a cultural genocide.
Baul does not need these external fabricators. The indigenous ancestral Bauls are working from within the tradition, deliberately not revealing what is happening to the "fake Bauls" because they are fully aware of their nature. This is precisely why Baul is a secret, esoteric lineage. (As a reminder, "lineage" is always based on ancestry). The Bauls refer to their lineage as a Guru Shishya Parampara Sampradaya, and there is only one.
The Esoteric Path of Authentic Baul: A State Beyond Imitation
The path of the Avadhuta is incredibly rare; no modern-day "Bauls" even approach this state, nor have they attained the techniques mastered by Nabani Das Khyapa Baul.
Authentic Baul also encompasses:
The path of the Rasa Leela Mystics (copyrighted).
The path of Rasa Tattva (copyrighted).
The path of Shakti Sadhana and the path of Radha. Birbhum is intrinsically known as the land of Radha.
Unmasking the "Pretendian Bauls": A Pattern of Fraudulent Appropriation
It is infuriating to witness a "fake Pretendian Baul" brazenly copy Babu Kishan's extensive history of teaching Baul, Indian Philosophy, Indian Music, and Sanskrit at universities and the Ramakrishna Mission worldwide for decades. Babu Kishan actually did the work; he holds a BA and Master's degree from the University of Calcutta, which qualified him as a paid lecturer at universities and as a Monk within the Ramakrishna order for 12 years. He put in the genuine effort.
Yet, this untrained "fake pretendian Baul" suddenly advertises that they have achieved the same. Upon deeper investigation into why someone is meticulously copying every step Babu Kishan has taken, we discover a video of this individual teaching at Berkeley University, erroneously claiming there are "4 types of Baul"—Muslim, Aul, Sai, Dervish, Fakir—perpetuating completely false narratives copied directly from an inaccurate book. This same person asserts that Baul is from Turkey and that Baul is Buddhist, simply because they read it somewhere, all while appropriating Nabani's Vaishnava songs directly from Babu Kishan's YouTube channel. This demonstrates extreme malleability and a consistent pattern of copying everything from this lineage, even while fabricating a "fake lineage" and a "fake Baul Guru."
My dear, Babu Kishan, also known as Krishnendu Das, pioneered Baul and created the very road these individuals are now copying. He knows every single "fake Baul Guru" and their fabricated story. Stop the lying. One moment they embody one identity, and the next they appear as "Radha with full tilaka," attempting to secure "fundraising jackpots" to "preserve Baul," when Baul has already been preserved by Babu Kishan for over 60 years, and by at least 13 documented generations before him.
Baul originates from families; it is indigenous ancestry. The only way you can possibly grasp even a fraction of this tradition is through this one and only lineage and their recordings of the songs, which are then shamelessly stolen by others. You cannot invent this level of deception! Baul has been exploited long enough by "fake (pretendian) Bauls" who have concocted "fake Baul Gurus," riding on the coattails of this sole authentic lineage to travel the world fabricating stories.
The End of an Era: The Truth About Authentic Baul's Extinction
Again, no new "Bauls" know anything about these intricate techniques! Authentic indigenous Baul is, regrettably, extinct. The last true Baul Guru was Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, who passed in 1969.
None of the individuals who have emerged as "Bauls" since the 1970s—all the names you might encounter—were genuinely Bauls. They all self-titled themselves "Das Baul" and re-recorded the songs of this lineage. They frequented places like Tarapith and Shantiniketan because this was where the "hippies" converged, and where Indian artists gathered due to the presence and fame of this lineage, specifically Purna Das Baul and Babu Kishan (then known as Krishnendu Das).
While Babu Kishan's uncle, Laxshman Das Baul, also made Baul famous on the ground, he did not achieve the widespread fame of his elder brother, Purna Das Baul. Laxshman unfortunately associated with many individuals who were "not good associations," though Babu Kishan held deep affection for him and often tried to help him. I recall them speaking on the phone from Canada, both crying "Jai Nitai, Jai Nitai," discussing the state of Baul. Laxshman would often tell Babu, "Oh come on Babu, you know more than anybody, you know those people who call themselves Baul are not Baul." Laxshman, as an indigenous Baul, struggled to survive in this world; his eldest children passed away early, younger than Babu Kishan. They, too, tried to preserve the tradition, but life for indigenous people is often fraught with difficulty, and thus "fake pretendian Bauls" have stripped indigenous Bauls of their livelihood.
The Feminine Divine and the Essence of Baul Sadhana
Everything in Baul is filtered through the three (Tri) Gunas, encompassing the aspects of Lakshmi, Durga, and Saraswati. This is because Bauls always worship Radha first; they worship the Feminine Divine, Shakti, first, specifically Radha/Kali.
The Baul tradition reveres Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma.
Their reverence for the Guru is paramount, captured in the mantra: Guru Bramha, Guru Vishnu. Guru Devo Mahesh Varaha. Guru Sakshat Param Brahma Tasmai Sri Gurave Namaha.
Debunking the Deceptions: The True Nature of Bauls
Bauls are emphatically NOT illiterate, degraded, low caste, no caste, or among the lowest rungs of society. They are not random wandering people or individuals who have nowhere to fit in. This constitutes the biggest deception and lie perpetuated about them.
Bauls are indigenous and profoundly educated in all Indian Philosophies, including several others. They are Oral Sanskritists, possessing numerous manuscripts, including over 200 Vaishnava Agamas. They are well-versed in Shiva and Brahma traditions, as well as the history of the Mahabharata and Ramayan, the Vedas, Tantra, Upanishads, and Puranas.
Historically, Bengal was home to many wandering individuals, but those people were not Baul. However, many academic scholars wrongly assumed they were. Furthermore, many British-educated, English-speaking Vaishnava orthodox reformers harbored an aversion to the indigenous peoples of Bengal, including the Bauls and approximately eight other distinct sects, and actively degraded them. These reformers often hailed from wealthy Zamindar families and viewed indigenous Hindus as "savages," promoting horrific and nasty falsehoods about Bauls. It's crucial to understand that the orthodox traditions are compelled to fundraise to build temples and require a "flock" to preach to. The fundamental difference between the Vaishnava Sahajiya Bauls of Birbhum and the orthodox and New Age Vaishnavas lies in this need for a congregation to solicit donations for their temples and preaching activities. The New Age and orthodox Vaishnavas typically abhor Tantra; they preach from elevated positions, enjoy having their feet touched, and operate within a rigid bureaucracy, a system of government and hierarchical preaching, dictating even the definition of "love." They fundamentally misunderstand Tantra and Sahaja, considering both to be "dirty words."
Baul Sahajiya is natural and spontaneous, imbued with an indigenous, childlike wonder. They do not preach; they teach and are an integral part of the villages of Birbhum, West Bengal. Indigenous to the "soul and soil of the land," they follow the path of nature and the natural world, encompassing Dattatreya, Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, and Shakti Sadhana. Bauls are Tantrics of the highest order, generally Vaishnava Tantrics. However, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and a select few others were Vaishnava Shaivite Shakti Tantrics of the Avadhut lineage, reaching the highest levels in Tantra.
The Costume of Deception: Exposing "Pretendian Bauls"
The "pretendian Bauls" who perform today, often dressed in costumes with full-length dreadlocks (Jata), do so solely to attract foreigners and unsuspecting Indians. Only Nabani Das Khyapa Baul had authentic dreadlocks because he engaged in rigorous Tantric practice in isolation, in burning grounds and forests, for years, without the modern comforts of showers, living completely in nature. If an individual lives in modern society and travels internationally as a performer, such an appearance is a costume designed to attract attention. If these "pretendian Bauls" were genuine, they would cut off their "costume" and see if anyone still paid them any mind. It's a calculated "game of attraction." While individual choice is fine, stop pretending to be a Baul and falsely advertising yourself as a "self-titled lying Baul Master," when no such thing exists. Those who are "pretendian fake Bauls" today are not Bauls; they are using Baul as their "game," or they are middle-class Bengalis who are blatantly lying.
This critique is not directed at the villagers of Birbhum who sing Baul songs as part of a tourist attraction. What is being addressed is far more sinister: the intellectual indigenous property theft of this lineage and the active lying involved in creating fake Baul Gurus and fake Baul lineages for international travel and fundraising "jackpots" under the guise of "preserving Baul," when Baul has already been preserved. These individuals have already looted this lineage and continue to do so with no conscience, relying solely on "fake acting skills."
This widespread deception waters down Baul and profoundly reduces the cultural significance of indigenous ancestral Baul to a mere shadow of its true essence. By creating false narratives, it has led to a cultural genocide, stripping opportunities from an already marginalized, small group of indigenous people. Baul does not need these external actors. The indigenous ancestral Bauls are working from within the tradition, deliberately not revealing their true practices to the "fake Bauls" because they are fully aware of the nature of these imposters. This is why Baul remains a secret, esoteric lineage.
The Deep Spiritual Practice: Baul Sadhana and Rasa Tattva
Authentic Bauls are deceptively simple and prefer to maintain that simplicity. They are Oral Sanskritists from birth, within families, and are well-versed in all aspects of the Vedas. Their path is that of the Avadhut, which is emphatically not a beginner's path.
Shakti Sadhana is central: Radha is worshipped before Krishna, and Kali is worshipped before Shiva, though all deities are revered.
The need for copyright stems solely from the pervasive lying and cheating of "fake pretendian Bauls." They are not to be trusted; they lie regularly and cheat constantly, often appearing innocent but being far from it.
All Yogic teachings are filtered by a Baul through a unique technique called Rasa Tattva (copyright). All elements are refined into a beautiful Rasa.
The core practices and beliefs include:
Bhakti Yoga
Lineage of Baul Vaishnava Kirtan (copyright)
Yoga
Tantra
Vedanta
Bauls understand existence as:
Dual (form) in the world
Non-dual (no form) out of the world
Embracing both Dvaita and Advaita
Being "In the World and yet not of the World."
Their practice involves Raga Bhava Rasa.
Bauls engage in energy work, akin to mystical Qi Gong, which must be mastered before any performance. Bauls do not teach or perform unless they are with their Guru. Today, such authentic Gurus are rare, if they exist at all.
The situation is complex. Just a few years ago, no one could even explain what Baul truly was. Today, those who attempt to explain it either directly copy from this lineage or rework and dilute the authentic information, just as they do with songs from this lineage.
The tradition includes Indian Music/Baul songs accompanied by long discourses.
Baul Kirtan is an absolute hallmark of this lineage only. The sudden adoption of the term "Baul Kirtan" by others, who never used it before, is further evidence of the ongoing theft and appropriation, and the constant reshaping of narratives to legitimize their "fake lineages."
The Unrivaled Depth of Baul Philosophy and Practice
Bauls undergo a rigorous process: they learn all of Indian Philosophy, which is then refined through a unique technique called Rasa Tattva, transforming it into Baul Philosophy. This encompasses a profound understanding of:
Tantra
Vedas
Upanishads
Puranas
Vaishnava Tantra, inclusive of all Devatas.
They possess and utilize techniques that have never been taught to new Bauls.
The practice of Krishna / Kali Kirtan is exclusive to this lineage.
While Baul songs are deceptively simple songs in vernacular Birbhum Bengali, their depth stems from a rich philosophical foundation.
Lineage, Authenticity, and the Deception of "Initiation"
This lineage is characterized by Oral Sanskrit tradition from birth within families, consistently. While Baul may have adopted some aspects, it remains incredibly difficult to genuinely be a Baul. Baul is extinct. Babu Kishan diligently preserved and recorded Baul decades ago, starting in the 1960s.
It is an absolute lie to claim Baul is not from families, or that it's solely "by initiation." We challenge those who claim such initiation: "LOL, who initiated you?" Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was the last Baul Guru. It is widely known that neither Purna Das Baul nor Babu Kishan claimed that role. A fabricated, "made-up Baul Guru" cannot initiate anyone. This is a joke that will be profoundly exposed very soon.
Today, many individuals use "Baul," watering it down, reducing its profound essence, and propagating erroneous teachings. A significant amount has been directly copied and twisted from the immense work Babu Kishan has done over the years. Songs from this lineage are used without credit to the original poets. An authentic Baul always credits the poets and ensures the correct names are attached. Some individuals even brazenly attribute songs to other poets, which is blatant cultural appropriation.
Nabani Das Khyapa Baul's distinctive styles of playing the Ektara, the Baya (waist drum), and his unique Nupoor (ankle bells) have been appropriated and used by "actor Bauls" who are shamelessly capitalizing on this lineage, even having the audacity to fabricate new lineages and false narratives. It's a sad but undeniable truth.
Furthermore, a poem from this lineage was used in William Dalrymple's book, Nine Lives, on page 236, Chapter Nine, with no credit given to the true poet. Moreover, two paragraphs that have no connection to the poem were inserted. Rabindranath Tagore famously gave Nabani Das Khyapa Baul the name "Mirror of the Sky"—a well-known fact. Yet, Dalrymple, supposedly a historian, overlooked this.
Why is this acceptable? Baul is extinct, this is historical fact, yet everyone is corrupting the understanding of Baul openly and purposefully, solely for their own gain.
As visual proof, one can observe Nabani Das Khyapa Baul's (only) style of ankle bells, called Nupoor, in pictures where he sits in padmasana yogi style, with the bells lying on the ground. In the adjacent picture, he holds his Ektara (the one-stringed instrument) and the Baya at his waist. This combination of style is exclusive to Nabani and this one and only lineage. Others copied him and then invented new lineages that never existed. When something as sacred as Baul is extinct or an endangered lineage, such actions are unconscionable.
They may act, look, and speak with false innocence, but this has been a highly strategic marketing game. What has truly transpired regarding Baul is a cultural misappropriation of an indigenous people. The truth will be told.
Baul is not a "free for all"; it is NOT an umbrella name for various groups of wandering peoples.
No one would even know about Baul if not for this specific family of Bauls. Baul's popularity soared through the tireless work of this family: Nabani Das Khyapa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and Krishnendu Das Baul (Babu Kishan), who many do not know because he always remained behind the scenes, often taking the very pictures others now appropriate.
There are many others in this family, including the Baul women: Brajabala Dasi, Radharani Dasi, and Manju Dasi, and many other Baul men, including Laxshman Das Baul. Any "Das Baul" or "Dasi" are only from this lineage. There is no other lineage of "Das Baul" or "Dasi." This is a lie now found in books and promoted by "Marketing Masters" who meticulously follow and copy Babu Kishan's template, then create NEW FAKE LINEAGES that do not exist.
Their so-called "Gurus" sang the songs of this lineage, dressed like this lineage, used Nabani's style Ektara, Baya, and Nupoor, and followed them around the world, copying everything. Yet, they now fabricate new lineages, with their students completely unaware, simply using the stolen material. This lineage comprises the true pioneers; all others followed them, especially during the age of the internet and the pursuit of internet fame. The next stop for some is Indian Cinema, which has nothing to do with Baul but was Babu Kishan's personal career. It's a serious joke.
An authentic Baul knows who the Baul poets are. To claim otherwise is another act of cheating, watering down, and reducing Baul's integrity.
Baul Philosophy encompasses both Dual (Dvaita) and Non-dual (Advaita) perspectives.
Bauls follow the 36 Tattvas, but they also meticulously break them down into 108 Tattvas, refining the process to a profound degree.
Preservation, Endangerment, and the Call for Truth
Babu Kishan has meticulously archived and preserved his one and only lineage of Baul decades ago, over more than 60 years. It is now extinct. I reiterate: do not donate to anybody who is a fake Baul. Our forthcoming book, expected soon in 2025, will provide clear guidance on how to discern authenticity.
Baul Sahaja is not derived from Buddhism. It is not merely about mantras. There is a vast Vaishnava philosophy that underpins Baul Sahaja. Baul Sahaja has no connection to South Indian traditions, Aurobindo's writings, or Ramana Maharshi. Baul Sahaja is uniquely Baul Sahaja, originating exclusively from Birbhum, Bengal, through this lineage. It is Vaishnava and founded on Krishna, the greatest Sahajiya, and Dattatreya, the oldest Sahajiya (Sahaja).
Unfortunately, the old ways often became unviable, leading to poverty, alcoholism, drug abuse, and immense suffering for the original Bauls, who are indigenous people from Birbhum.
Baul is NOT from Bangladesh, nor from other parts of India, nor, God forbid, from Persia, Turkey, or Uzbekistan. You name it, we have heard it all and meticulously documented who said what and when. 😥 We have documented specific people who are posing as Baul, the fake it til you make it Bauls, the Baul artists and self-titled Baul Masters who have made these statements, their names are documented and they will be released because of ongoing deceptions and intellectual indigenous property theft.
Babu Kishan's Unique Legacy and the Ramakrishna Connection
Ramakrishna himself expressed a desire to be born a Baul in his next life, speaking about Baul on numerous occasions and declaring them "the highest." Babu Kishan personally knew the Ramakrishna Monks at the Ramakrishna Mission, many of whom were still close disciples of Ramakrishna. He possesses numerous inside stories and cultivated deep relationships with many Swamis over decades. Those days are gone; times have changed. Now, some even seek to appropriate that part of Babu Kishan's life and legacy.
Babu Kishan, also known as Krishnendu Das Baul, is the last of the Modern Bauls. He was educated in the village by his Guru Grandfather Nabani, as the eldest of his generation, and has lived a life beyond the village. Now at 60 years of age, he has lived many lives in one. His own father and brother never explicitly stated that Nabani was their Guru (though he was), but it is only Babu Kishan who maintained an unbroken connection with Nabani because Nabani ceased his sadhu wandering ways after Babu (then Krishnendu) was born. It is only Babu who has consistently kept Nabani's name alive, not his father, nor his uncles.
It's crucial to understand that Nabani, as his grandfather, was the only father Babu knew from birth until age 8. Nabani and Brajabala were the only father and mother he knew until he went to live with Purna Das Baul and Manju, his birth parents, in Calcutta. This was the hardest period of Babu's life, as they placed him in a Ramakrishna orphanage while his two younger brothers attended regular school and lived at home—a very long and painful story.
Babu Kishan's Pioneer Status and The Fight for Truth
Referencing BabuKishan.org, Babu Kishan holds a 'Masters Level' in Indian Music and Indian Philosophy from Calcutta University.
Babu Kishan is a genuinely qualified Indian Music Composer, not self-named. He was formally educated, underwent rigorous exams, and produced a substantial body of work before being accepted into the Music Composers association of his era, requiring endorsements from accomplished Indian Music Composers. He is the first and last Baul to live this history. There is no need for any "fake pretendian Baul" to try to associate with Babu Kishan's lived history. His 40-year career in the Indian Cinema (Bollywood) industry is unparalleled. For someone to make a YouTube video and try to associate with Indian Cinema and Bollywood while fabricating a Baul identity is insidious. One must first do the work: attend university, engage with the Ramakrishna Mission, and even meet Osho, before attempting to act as if they possess such knowledge or experience in Indian Cinema. The extent and level of this lived Baul identity theft are truly creepy. The names of the people who lived these stories are being erased. If Bob Dylan is mentioned, they pretend familiarity and make flippant remarks. You are fake, and you will be exposed for meticulously retracing and pretending to have lived every step taken by Babu Kishan and his one and only family lineage.
He is a Sanskritist, both Oral and Classical, and has traveled the world since the early 1970s. He is a pioneer in taking Baul across India and created the template for modern Baul followers, even though many "Baul travelers" have unfortunately become liars and copycats, inventing lineages and stories. He created the path of the modern Baul traveling worldwide; the "pretendian fakes" did not.
Exclusive Lineage Connections and Cultural Markers
Sri Nityananda and the lineage from his family of Ekachakra, Birbhum, Bengal: This is exclusive to this lineage's association in regards to Baul.

The terms Das Baul and Dasi belong exclusively to this lineage!
Baul Kirtan is also specific to this lineage.
Baul Guru is a title of this lineage.
Connections to Global Icons:
Bob Dylan: This lineage, through Purna Das Baul, was featured on his album.

Esoteric Practices and Contested Histories
Baul Avadhut: This state is exclusive to this lineage. Nabani was the last Baul Avadhut. If you hear others claiming to be Baul Avadhuts, please laugh!
Poush Mela was created by Rabindranath Tagore in honor of Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. We have numerous accounts of how other "Bauls" were not permitted to perform because Shanti Dev Ghosh knew they were fakes. It was only Babu Kishan who advocated for them, though perhaps he shouldn't have, as once the true authentic Bauls were gone, the fakes gained access, and now their students are fabricating elaborate stories.
Joy Dev Mela: For hundreds of years, only this lineage attended this Mela, due to their profound connection to the poetry of Joy Dev, which they incorporated into many of their songs. Today, it contains very few authentic Bauls. Nabani Das Khyapa Baul was the biggest attraction, followed by Purna Das Baul, who needed police protection due to his popularity and because the "fake it till you make it" Bauls were jealous and even poisoned Purna Das Baul at the Monohar Ashram. The culprits were known but never charged. All will be revealed in the new book.
Vaishnava Baul and Vaishnava Tantric Baul are key distinctions.
The term Windcatchers - Baul = Vayu Tula (with 'V' being 'B' in Bengali, hence Batula = Baula = Baul) signifies how Baul refines complex concepts into simple terms. Note: Baul is a combination of two Sanskrit words, NOT a Urdu name. There is no such thing as "Muslim Baul," and Baul is not Aul, Sai, Dervish, Fakir, or Shah, which are Sufi traditions. Sufi are NOT Baul.
Rasa Lila Mystics is a term Babu Kishan coined, based on the Rasa Tattva techniques he learned from Nabani Das Baul.
The explanation of Baul is rooted in Vayu Dharma, Vayu Tula.
Ananda Lahari: Nabani named the Khamak the Ananda Lahari. Therefore, if you claim to be from another lineage and use this term, you are implicitly using Nabani's and this lineage's knowledge.
The tradition is characterized by Oral Tradition, Oral Sanskrit, Manuscripts, and vernacular Birbhum dialect.
Ektara / Gopi Yantra / Gopi Chand belong exclusively to this lineage!
The Tarapith Tara Ma association with Baul primarily stemmed from Nabani Das Khyapa Baul; others merely followed.
The poetry of this Lineage, archived by Babu Kishan, is extensive and continues to grow. We are documenting all the users who fabricate stories while appropriating the lyrics, poetry, and tunes of this lineage. They now act as if these were their own, despite never having mentioned them before they were published on Babukishan.com in the 1990s and in Babu's three books. They claim to have learned it elsewhere. Babu also had the first website on Baul, created by Mary Johnson.
Mary could meticulously track who copied and pasted what. It's astonishing that over a million people visited his website, then proceeded to write about Baul and use its content without any credit. This includes Babu's two younger brothers; Babu has helped and continues to help his middle brother constantly, yet he still receives no credit. What a comedy! BabuKishan.com was unfortunately taken down by Mary Johnson before her passing in 2006 (she held the password, RIP Mary). Babu could not recover the website because, by then, the web company demanded thousands of dollars for him to purchase his own name back. We let it go. Someone is still trying to sell Babukishan.com, but we are not going to pay for it. If not for the widespread "copy and paste" culture and this 1990s website, no one would know anything about Baul beyond what scholars wrote or the three out-of-print books Babu Kishan authored and gave to his parents, who, uncaringly, gave his writings to a Western Vaishnava woman who then wrote about Purna Das Baul from her perspective.
From 1970 to today, Babu Kishan has delivered hundreds of lectures worldwide at universities. He was a paid lecturer, qualified with a Masters Level degree from Calcutta University, which dispatched him across India to lecture on Indian Philosophy. Why do others attempt to copy him? He is not their Guru. He does not seek followers or wish to amass a flock. All he has ever wanted is to preserve his lineage, which he accomplished decades ago. The truth, now that we have documented all the false narratives and exploitations of Baul, will be released one by one. Why would anyone copy his Indian Cinema and Ramakrishna associations? It's so transparent, even to the point of creating a new lineage, but Babu Kishan does not resort to buying bots.
The term Baul Akhara was not commonly used by others until recently.
Authentic Baul often makes its path crooked and not easily accessible. However, in this modern world, this very approach has unfortunately left the door open for all the fakes. The truth must now be told, and all these fakes must be qualified. You cannot learn Baul in 3 days or 3 years. Baul takes many lifetimes to even begin to grasp. There is a definitive method to qualify the fakes, and Babu Kishan knows this method.
We are not saying, "Come join us." We are here to educate and tell the truth of who and what Baul truly is.
