Babu Kishan, Osho, and the Lineage Bauls of Bengal
Babu Kishan (Krishnendu Das Baul) is a born Vaishnava Tantric Baul from the sacred soil of Suri, Birbhum, West Bengal. Given at birth to his grandparents, the legendary Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Brajabala Dasi, he was named Krishnendu, known today as KD Babu Kishan.
His name "Babu Kishan" was forged in the halls of Bollywood. He deliberately chose this moniker to build an international career entirely on his own merit—refusing to ride the coattails of his father, Purna Das Baul, or his fame in Bengal. Because of this intentional separation, few in Bengal realize that the quiet mastermind Krishnendu Das is the renowned producer Babu Kishan.
The Truth About Osho and the Bauls
Osho knew Babu Kishan personally. During the 1980s, while Babu was composing and producing music in Bombay for CBS, Osho specifically sought him out to record his talks onto tape. Beyond their professional work, Osho knew Babu Kishan as a close friend. Decades earlier, as a young student traveling through Bengal, Osho had met only one authentic Baul: Babu’s grandfather, Nabani Das Khyapa Baul. Osho’s entire fascination with the Baul tradition was sparked by that singular encounter with Nabani. Years later, Babu became close friends with the famed Bombay cartoonist who had accompanied Osho on that original trip to Bengal, hearing every detail of the journey firsthand.
Babu Kishan is the only living Baul qualified to speak accurately about Osho's relationship with the tradition. Today’s self-proclaimed "experts" are merely name-droppers echoing rumors—hot air from observers who know nothing outside of what they read on this archive.
Osho published two books on the Bauls. While popular, they contain fundamental inaccuracies and oversimplifications written to attract a Western audience. In their extensive conversations, Babu asked Osho to revise these books to reflect the true tradition. Osho agreed, but passed away in 1990 at the age of 58 before he could make the corrections.
Scholarly Appropriation and Cultural Genocide
Osho claimed Bauls were not philosophers. He was entirely wrong. Bauls are master philosophers of the highest order, navigating the complex depths of both dual and non-dual Indian philosophy.
They are poets, but the inner sadhana (spiritual practice) is the true essence of a Baul. The names of the lineage poets are sacred. There is no generic "Baul," and no true Baul would ever claim that authorship does not matter. Only impostors and outsiders hiding behind preservation funds claim that "Bauls don't care."
For nearly 60 years, Babu Kishan has observed international scholars and opportunists take advantage of the tradition. Scholars toss a few rupees to impoverished practitioners, extract lineage knowledge for personal career advancement, misidentify authors, and mistranslate sacred songs. Under the guise of preservation, they commit a form of cultural genocide. This systematic exploitation is precisely why Babu Kishan guards this sacred knowledge so closely.
Lineage Legacy vs. Revisionist History
The global awareness of Baul culture exists because of one family: Nabani Das Kheppa Baul, Purna Das Baul, and Babu Kishan. They brought the tradition out of Bengal to the world stage.
Following the Partition and the 1971 war, influxes of refugees fled to Calcutta, an era when Purna Das Baul’s voice dominated Indian radio. Babu Kishan opened his home to many of these refugees, feeding, housing, and teaching them. Yet as the struggle for survival intensified, many of these former disciples and servants erased Babu’s name. In the rush to "fake it till you make it," many adopted the outer persona of Purna Das Baul to earn a living as singers, without ever receiving the true Baul transmission. Extreme jealousy even culminated in a cowardly attempt to poison Purna Das Baul at the Joydev Mela—a story that will soon be fully exposed with names.
Furthermore, the modern association of Lalon Fakir with the Baul tradition is a late 20th-century development. Lalon’s poetry was largely unknown to the wider public until this family traveled to Bangladesh in the 1970s and recorded it. Babu Kishan was the first to bring Bangladeshi singers to Calcutta and compose musical arrangements for Lalon's verses—prior to this, Lalon’s poetry was not sung to these melodies. Lalon Fakir (or Shah) was a profound poet, but he was not a Baul and never practiced Baul sadhana.
Roots of the Tradition
Babu’s birth mother, Manju Das, was the daughter of Jogesh Das, a distinguished professor of Sanskrit and holder of three Master’s degrees at Dhaka University. In 1952, the family fled East Pakistan to escape state-sponsored violence against Bengali and Sanskrit speakers.
Historical Bangladesh had virtually no traditional Bauls. The region was home to Dervishes, Fakirs, Sais, and Shahs—Muslim Sufi lineages that are fundamentally distinct from Baul.
For thousands of years, the Baul tradition has been rooted in Vaishnava Indian philosophy. Out of deep compassion, the Bauls provided refuge to all who were rejected by orthodox social structures, including outcastes, Buddhists, and Sufis. As Sufis and Buddhists entered Bengal, the Bauls absorbed the spiritual juice of their teachings, but they remained firmly rooted in their own lineage. Generosity toward refugees does not make a refugee a Baul, and no amount of revisionism can erase the true lineage.
The Extinction of the Lineage and the Distortion of Baul Dharma
The aftermath of the 1971 war and the influx of East Pakistani refugees into Bengal marked the beginning of a profound disruption. Fleeing severe hardship, many sought survival by imitating Purna Das Baul—singing his family's sacred songs, adopting his style, and capitalizing on his global success. Realizing the prestige of the tradition, many eventually claimed to be masters themselves, fabricating fake lineages and appointing uninitiated gurus.
The historical timeline exposes these revisionist claims. Nabani Das Kheppa Baul passed away in 1969. None of these modern self-proclaimed followers ever met him, nor did most distant relatives. Only his devoted wife, Brajabala Dasi, remained to hold the home until the late 1990s while managing the family. For Babu Kishan, Brajabala was his true motherly figure; raised directly by his grandparents, Babu only learned in the early 1970s that Nabani was his grandfather and Purna Das Baul was his birth father.
Because Babu Kishan stood at the center of this household, he personally guided, encouraged, and funded many of these musicians on their global journeys. Yet, instead of honoring the tradition, many rode his coattails and systematically erased the family’s name to construct their own narratives.
Rooted in Sanatan Dharma, Not Modern Trends
Baul is not a casual lifestyle, a cult, or a modern fusion movement—it is an ancient Dharma and a singular, sacred Sampradaya rooted in Sanatan Dharma. Authentic Bauls are Tantric Bhakti Yogis of the Vaishnava tradition, grounded in pure love, humility, and absolute respect—a stark contrast to the commercialized and abusive distortions seen in some modern Westernized sects.
Authentic Vaishnava Bauls are described as "sweeter and humbler than a blade of grass." Their lineage survived centuries of colonial oppression, foreign invasions, disease, and famine, only to face near-extinction in the modern era. While the original tradition is now almost extinct due to commercial exploitation and reductionism, the core teachings remain profound:
Universal Acceptance: Authentic Bauls honor all spiritual paths, freely visiting temples, mosques, and churches.
Beyond Sufism: While Sufi and other sectarian groups focus strictly on their own doctrines, the Baul tradition synthesizes universal truths. Lalon Fakir's poetry reflected this broad humanism, yet poetry alone does not make one a Baul without the secret internal sadhana (spiritual practice). Lalon Fakir was not a Baul, he did not do Baul Sadhana. There is a long story how writers and academics speculated that Baul was Muslim, they are not, there is 100% proof. That is a whole other post.
The UNESCO Farce: In 2005, UNESCO declared the Bauls a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity." In practice, this initiative became a historical tragedy. Millions in international funding were diverted by corrupt officials who falsely reclassified Baul as a Persian or purely Islamic tradition to secure government grants for non-existent archives, further erasing the authentic Vaishnava lineage. Baul only comes from Birbhum W Bengali India, they do not speak Urdu, they are based on Vaishnavism, there is no other type of Baul, there is a reason this all came about and it is based on lies.
One first must understand exactly what the term Baul means and it is based on 2 Sanskrit words -Vayu- B is V in Vernacular Birbhum Bengali thus Baula - Baul - and Tula. Bauls does not mean the ayuverdic term vatula which is a wind disease, Baul is not wrongly translated as "a wind disease' or affliced by the wing. Learn what Vayu is then learn what tula mean. Can you imagine calling someone sick with the wind? or Mad, mad is for mad dogs and English men, not for Baul. Learn who Dattatreya is, who is Krishna/ Radha. Who is Hanuman as the son of the Wind Deva (Vayu). Would you call Hanuman a wind disease. Learn to think and new follow what you read.
Exploitation and the Osho Myth - by so called self-titled experts on Baul and by Fake Bauls.
The true Baul path is a strict Guru-Parampara (lineage transmission) requiring lifelong study of Sanskrit, philosophy, and internal practice from birth. It cannot be acquired through casual interest or superficial scholarship.
Since the late 1970s, Babu Kishan—who authored three foundational books on the Bauls in the 1980s—has actively challenged Western academic misrepresentations. Lecturing at major universities worldwide, he confronted researchers who paid impoverished individuals small sums to extract surface-level information, publishing flawed theories to advance their academic careers at the expense of a living family legacy.
This same pattern of oversimplification appears in Osho’s writings. Before Osho ever met Babu Kishan, he had published books on the Bauls based on a single meeting with Nabani Das Kheppa Baul decades prior. Osho's famous assertion—"To be a Baul nothing is needed... the moment you possess anything, any past, you are a Baul"—is a double-edged paradox. While spiritually evocative, taking such statements literally reduces a rigorous, lifelong Tantric discipline to an easy aesthetic. It has allowed opportunists to grow dreadlocks, don robes, and declare themselves Bauls without undergoing the necessary discipline or initiation.
Today, performers continue to travel to cultural centers like Delhi, claiming lineage authority while singing poetry composed by Babu Kishan without attribution.
There is only ONE original lineage of Baul. Authentic preservation requires accurate historical truth, respect for sacred authorship, and an end to the commercial poaching of a ancient family lineage.
